Traditional Nuremberg District Kirchweih at the Parish Courtyard of the Church of Reconciliation
The Kirchweih in Schniegling, a quiet district in the northwest of Nuremberg, is part of the rich Franconian Kärwa tradition. With around 40 district Kirchweihen per year between the end of April and the end of September, Nuremberg is one of Germany's cities richest in Kirchweihen — and Schniegling cultivates the tradition particularly intensely. Unlike the large commercial folk festivals, the Schniegling festival days take place on a manageable scale: not on a festival ground with a Ferris wheel and roller coaster, but directly at the Parish Courtyard of the Evangelical Church of Reconciliation on Holsteiner Straße.
The charm of the Schniegling Kärwa lies in the mix of parish atmosphere and Franconian joie de vivre. A central element is the traditional Kärwabaum (Kirchweih tree), which is erected by the local clubs before the opening. In addition, there is a carousel and stalls, live music in the parish garden, a classic Sunday morning pint (Frühschoppen) with a brass choir, and the obligatory festival beer on tap. The proceeds from the tombola and sales stalls traditionally benefit the kindergarten and community work.
Schniegling is located between the A750 bypass and the Pegnitzgrund, nestled between Wetzendorf, Almoshof, and Maxfeld. The Church of Reconciliation with its striking brick tower has been the spiritual and social center of the neighborhood since the 20th century. The Kärwa here is not just a festival, but also an anchor point of local identity: for four days, Schniegling families, former confirmands, and older community members meet in the parish courtyard.
If you are looking for a quieter, more authentic Kärwa atmosphere than at the folk festival on Dutzendteich or the Altstadtfest, Schniegling is the place for you. The Schniegling Kirchweih is part of a dense Kärwa calendar that dominates the summer months in Nuremberg — if you want to experience the district character, you shouldn't miss it.
The Schniegling Kirchweih 2026 runs from Friday, July 3rd, to Monday, July 6th, at the parish courtyard of the Evangelical Church of Reconciliation at Holsteiner Straße 13-19. As every year, the weekend begins with the ceremonial raising of the Kärwabaum and the festival opening on Friday afternoon. The carousel, tombola, bratwurst stand, and beer service are open throughout the festival weekend.
Sunday is traditionally the spiritual highlight: a Festival Service in the Church of Reconciliation, accompanied by the parish's brass choir, followed by an extended Frühschoppen in the parish garden. In the afternoon, coffee and homemade cake are served, and in the evening, there is live music in the garden. Monday is traditionally dedicated to winding down the festival with a small program.
Detailed daily program and times will be announced in advance by the Schniegling Evangelical Parish community (notice at the church, parish newsletter). The official overview of all Nuremberg district Kirchweihen in 2026 can be found at nuernberg.de.
