Southern Germany's largest street painting festival — the main street as an open-air gallery
Since its first edition in 2002, the Blumberg Street-Art Festival has developed into one of Europe's most important street painting gatherings. The main street of this small town in the southern Black Forest — an approximately 800-meter-long commercial street — is completely closed off for two days once a year and transformed into an open-air gallery with chalk, pastels, and special paints.
The festival is divided into three artistic areas:
The festival runs on Saturday and Sunday — on Saturday, painting and performances take place, with the artistic work reaching its peak on Saturday evening. On Sunday, the works remain visible, further performances continue, and visitors have time to admire the pictures at their leisure. The 2-day wristband costs 8 EUR — an affordable festival experience with high artistic value. Children under 16 have free admission.
A stage in the market square offers live music on Saturday evening — cover bands, indie acts, and DJ sets. This transforms the festival into a social evening event, with many visitors staying in town well past midnight.
Blumberg is located in the Schwarzwald-Baar district in Baden-Württemberg, directly on the Wutach Gorge and the source of the Wutach river. With around 10,000 inhabitants, the town is small but is known regionally for the historic Sauschwänzlebahn (a 19th-century museum narrow-gauge railway) and the Street-Art Festival. The Schwarzwald-Baar district borders Switzerland, and the festival accordingly attracts an international audience from the trinational Lake Constance-Black Forest region.
The 2026 edition continues the successful format. Blumberg's approximately 800-meter-long main street will be completely closed to traffic for the weekend and transformed into an open-air gallery. Around 40 professional street painters ('Masters') will work on their creations, many of them large-scale: 3D anamorphosis images with depth illusions, classic 2D portraits and landscapes, surreal compositions.
The performer acts will be spread along the street — juggling, acrobatics, fire-eaters, mimes, statue performances. In the Hobby area, students and even kindergarten children will have their own space.
2-day wristband 8 EUR (advance sale and at the box office). Children under 16 free. Food and drink stands on the main street at usual festival prices. Wristband sales points will be announced in June 2026 on street-art-festival.de.
Blumberg is located on the B 27 / B 314 between Donaueschingen and Schaffhausen (CH). By car: 30 minutes from Donaueschingen, 1 hour from Konstanz, 1 hour 30 minutes from Stuttgart. By train: Take the train to Blumberg-Riedöschingen, then an 8-minute walk to the festival. The historic Sauschwänzlebahn operates with special trips on the festival weekend.
