10-km nature run around the Rantumbecken UNESCO Wadden Sea area
Sylt, with around 18,000 inhabitants and a length of 38 kilometres, is Germany's largest North Sea island and part of the Nordfriesland district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. In the south of the island lies the Rantumbecken — a natural area enclosed by a dyke, which is now a nature reserve and bird paradise. A dyke path runs around it, offering constant views of the open mudflats and the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
Since 2008, the RUN ums Rantumbecken has established itself as one of Schleswig-Holstein's most beautiful nature runs. In 2026, the 19th edition will take place on September 20th. The event is organised by Insel Sylt Tourismus-Service GmbH and is deliberately positioned as a feel-good run, not a competition. The 250 starting places were sold out within 24 hours in recent years — an indication of how popular the run has become in the region.
Unlike classic competitive races, the RUN ums Rantumbecken is about experiencing nature and atmosphere. The limit on starting places ensures plenty of space on the course, and the communal breakfast after the run fosters interaction. The run is aimed at amateur athletes from Sylt and guests who want to combine their island stay with a sporting highlight.
The 19th edition of the RUN ums Rantumbecken will take place on Sunday, September 20, 2026, starting at 10 AM at Rantum harbour on Sylt. As in previous years, the limit is 250 starting places for the 10-km main course; registration was again sold out within hours in 2026.
The course follows the dyke around the Rantumbecken nature reserve clockwise — with constant views of the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. For children and youth, there are also courses over 1 and 2 km.
