The Fifth Season at the Gateway to the Bergisches Land
Rösrath, located in the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis on the southeastern outskirts of Cologne, is one of North Rhine-Westphalia's most traditional carnival strongholds beyond the cathedral city. Its proximity to Cologne shapes the customs: you'll hear 'Alaaf!', see Strüßjer (bouquets) and Kamelle (sweets) flying, and hear carnival hits in Kölsch – yet Rösrath's carnival has its very own, village-like Bergisch character, distinctly different from the city carnival in Cologne.
Since 2012, the Rösrath Carnival Committee has served as the umbrella organisation for nine carnival societies, coordinating all session activities across the three districts of Rösrath-Mitte, Hoffnungsthal, and Forsbach. This ensures that dates, parades, and sessions are harmonised without losing the local charm of individual societies. The official session motto for 2026 – 'Alaaf – mer dun et för Rösrath' – deliberately embraces the spirit of volunteerism: carnival and club life go hand in hand here.
In February 2026, you'll experience three major carnival parades in Rösrath: the Hoffnungsthal Parade, which has now celebrated its half-century, the Forsbach Parade on Carnival Sunday (February 15, 2026, 2 PM), and finally the Rose Monday Parade in Rösrath-Mitte on February 16, 2026, starting at 10 AM with 35 groups and around 1,000 participants. The organiser of the Rose Monday Parade is the association 'Gemeinsam für Rösrath e.V.' under parade leader Detlef Sand. Even on Thursday, February 12, 2026, the revellers will storm the town hall on Hauptstraße at 10 AM – traditionally, the mayor symbolically hands over the key to the city treasury to the reigning triumvirate.
The indoor events run from February 5 to 13, 2026, covering the full spectrum of Rhenish carnival: prince proclamation, ladies' sessions, gentlemen's sessions, family sessions, costume balls, and gala evenings. You can find current dates, seating arrangements, and remaining tickets at karnevalskomiteeroesrath.de/veranstaltungskalender. Tickets often sell out quickly because the session halls in Rösrath, Hoffnungsthal, and Forsbach are small and intimate – an advantage for anyone wanting to escape the often anonymous big-city carnival.
A Rösrath specialty is the annual Children's Triumvirate, which rotates among the city's primary schools. This allows entire generations to grow into the tradition – a model that many carnival strongholds now consider exemplary for fostering young talent. Schools and kindergartens actively participate in the parades, and family carnival is considered a cornerstone of the Rösrath session.
Rösrath is located in the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis (state of North Rhine-Westphalia), marking the transition between the Cologne Bay and the hilly Bergisches Land. This location is also reflected in the carnival: Kölsch dialect, Bützcher (kisses), and carnival hits meet Bergisch hospitality, small pubs, and the familiar 'Mer küent uss Bergisch Land' (We speak from the Bergisches Land). Anyone seeking an authentic, non-commercially organised carnival stronghold on the outskirts of Cologne, without getting lost in the sheer mass of the cathedral city's carnival, will find Rösrath the ideal destination.
The 14th season under the leadership of the Rösrath Carnival Committee of 2012 e.V. places a clear emphasis on volunteerism in 2026: the session motto 'Alaaf – mer dun et för Rösrath' combines tradition and club life. Detlef Sand (Gemeinsam für Rösrath e.V.) is once again responsible for the Rose Monday parade. In addition to the classic indoor events (ladies', gentlemen's, family, and children's sessions), the children's triumvirate from rotating primary schools and the town hall storming are integral parts of the session.
The exact order of sessions and remaining tickets can be found at karnevalskomiteeroesrath.de.

The carnival parades and the town hall storming are free to attend. Sessions, galas, and balls require tickets (usually between €15 and €45, depending on the venue and programme). Tickets are available exclusively through the organising societies or the committee.
