Sausage Festival with History
The Rawicher Woaschtfest in Rappach – a district of the market town Mömbris in the Aschaffenburg district – is one of the most traditional specialty festivals in Bavarian Untermain. Since the first festival in 1969, the Sängervereinigung Rappach e.V. has invited visitors every year on Mother's Day weekend for a culinary journey through Kahlgrund sausage cuisine. The name »Woaschtfest« is the dialect form of »Wurstfest« (sausage festival) – Rawicher stands for Rappach in local pronunciation.
Kahlgrund Sausage Cuisine
The focus is on the entire range of traditional sausage making from the Kahlgrund: Preßack, Blutwurst (blood sausage), Leberwurst (liver sausage), Kesselfleisch (cooked meat) – all homemade, all using recipes passed down through families in the valley for generations. This is served with hearty bread and – as a typical accompaniment in Untermain – Franconian apple wine (Apfelwoi).
Music and Singing
The organizer is a choir – the Sängervereinigung Rappach. Accordingly, the musical program is an integral part of the festival: performances by the local choir, guest performances by friendly associations from the Kahlgrund and surrounding areas, as well as folk songs and Franconian dialect songs.
Kahlgrund – the Lower Main Valley
The Kahlgrund is the valley of the Kahl river in the extreme northwest of Bavaria, on the border with Hesse. With its orchards, apple wine cellars, and the alternating influence of Franconian and Hessian food culture (Frankfurt sausage cuisine and Franconian bratwurst meet), it forms its own culinary region within the Aschaffenburg district. The Rawicher Woaschtfest is considered a »pearl of tradition« (Primavera24) – it preserves sausage recipes and singing culture that would have long been lost elsewhere in the valley.
