Kerb in Kahlgrund — Spessart Tradition for Centuries
In Lower Franconia — and especially in Kahlgrund on the edge of the Spessart — the Kerb (Kerwe, Kirchweih) is the social event of the year. The entire village comes together, every club participates, and brass music accompanies the festival week. In Blankenbach (around 1,530 inhabitants), the Kerb traditionally falls on the second weekend in July — in 2026, this means July 12th and 13th.
Blankenbach — Village between Kahlbach and Spessart
Blankenbach is located on the northwestern edge of the Spessart in the district of Aschaffenburg (Lower Franconia), 17 km from Aschaffenburg and about 50 km from Frankfurt am Main. Nestled in the Kahl valley, the municipality belongs to the Schöllkrippen administrative district and looks back on over 800 years of history. In 1966, two previously independent districts on both sides of the Kahl merged to form the present-day municipality — historically divided between the Archbishopric of Mainz and the County of Schönborn.
Parish Festival and Handover of Major Projects
The spiritual and social start to the Kerb weekend is the traditional parish festival on Sunday, July 12th, 2026, held at the Haus der Vereine, village square, or fire station (depending on the weather). The organizer is the Catholic parish of Blankenbach. A special highlight in 2026: On Sunday, July 13th, at 2 PM, the new multi-generational park and the extensions to the kindergarten and fire station will be officially handed over as part of the Kerb — a historic moment for the municipality, which has planned and financed these major projects over many years.
Atmosphere and Spessart Identity
Characteristic of the Blankenbacher Kerb is its close integration with village culture: the St. Kilian Church, several half-timbered houses made of red variegated sandstone, and the Erlenbach Chapel shape the village's appearance. During the Kerb weekend, the village moves together from the parish service to the festival tent, accompanied by brass music, with Franconian apple wine and Spessart beers being served. The main attraction remains the gathering of the village community.
