Traditional Ascension Day wine hike through the Pfülben vineyard – 16 vintners at 4 stations
Randersacker is one of Franconia's most traditional wine villages. The market town, with around 1,000 inhabitants, is located directly on the Main river, southeast of Würzburg, and is famous for its steep slopes on the sun-drenched shell limestone hillside. The Pfülben vineyard – one of Franconia's best sites for Silvaner and Riesling – is the venue for the annual Ascension Day wine hike.
The hiking route is a 5-kilometer Pfülben circular trail through the vineyards. At four tasting stations, Randersacker wineries will be serving their top wines: Silvaner, Riesling, Weißburgunder, Müller-Thurgau, and occasionally Spätburgunder. A total of 16 wineries are participating – including renowned houses such as Weingut Trockene Schmitts, Weingut Schmitt's Kinder, and Weingut Bürgerspital. Snack stands along the route offer Franconian specialties: Schäuferla burgers, bratwurst, cheese cubes, pretzels.
For €12, visitors at Randersacker's town hall courtyard (ticket sales 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) will receive the official tasting glass, four wine vouchers worth €2.50 each, and free travel on the shuttle bus from Würzburg Central Station to the Maingasse stop. Those who wish to drink more can purchase additional tasting vouchers at the stations. The organizers emphasize the character of an organized hiking event – music boxes, handcarts, and brought-along alcohol are expressly forbidden. Randersacker thus consciously distinguishes itself from chaotic Ascension Day drinking tours.
Mainfranken is the largest Franconian wine-growing region. Franconian wine – traditionally bottled in the Bocksbeutel (flask-shaped bottle) – is world-renowned for its dry Silvaner wines. Randersacker is located in the Würzburg district, Lower Franconia administrative region, Bavaria. The Pfülben vineyard is highly regarded worldwide.
The 2026 Ascension Day Wine Hike starts on Thursday, May 14, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the town hall courtyard in Randersacker. The 5-kilometer circular route through the Pfülben vineyard has four tasting stations where 16 Randersacker wineries will serve their top wines. Around 5,000 visitors are expected.
You can start at your own pace – there is no fixed hiking schedule; everyone walks the route as they please, enjoying wine and Franconian specialties along the way. The free shuttle bus runs between Würzburg Central Station and the Maingasse Randersacker stop.
A complete map of the stations with the respective wineries per station will be published shortly before the event on trockene-schmitts.de.
Recommended: Train to Würzburg Central Station, from there free shuttle bus to the Maingasse Randersacker stop (included in the ticket). By car: A3 (Randersacker exit), designated parking areas in the village. Public transport of WürzburgVS also possible as usual.
