Traditional Maypole raising on the eve of May 1st in the Pforzheim district of Brötzingen
The Maibaumstellen is one of the oldest and most deeply rooted spring customs in southern Germany. In Pforzheim-Brötzingen, the Weststadt-Bürgerverein 1906 e.V. has been responsible for preparing and decorating the maypole for decades. As early as the afternoon, club members and residents meet on the Kirchvorplatz Brötzingen (Brötzingen Church Forecourt) to adorn the freshly cut trunk with a brushwood wreath, colorful ribbons, signs of the local clubs, and small wooden figures. It is a handicraft that requires many hands — and that's exactly what makes it appealing: older people show the younger ones the knots, children can attach ribbons, and in the end, a lovingly decorated tree is ready to be erected.
With around 12,000 inhabitants, Brötzingen is the most populous district of Pforzheim. Until 1905, Brötzingen was an independent municipality before being incorporated into Pforzheim. The Brötzinger Hauptstraße (Brötzingen Main Street) with its historic half-timbered houses, the church, and the old town hall shapes the cityscape to this day. The church forecourt in front of the Protestant city church is the traditional meeting place of the district — it is also where the Christkindlesmarkt meeting, club festivals, and the Maibaumstellen take place. Pforzheim itself (around 125,000 inhabitants, district code 08231 in the north of the Black Forest, between Karlsruhe and Stuttgart) is world-famous as the "Gold City" for its jewelry and watchmaking craft.
Precisely at 2 p.m., the actual highlight begins. The Technischen Dienste der Stadt Pforzheim (Technical Services of the City of Pforzheim) arrive with long wooden poles — the so-called Schwalben (swallows) — and a heavy crane to erect the decorated tree. Until a few decades ago, this was done entirely by muscle power, with dozens of men lifting the trunk centimeter by centimeter with crossed timbers into a vertical position. Today, technology is more modern, but the spectacle remains: when the tree finally stands upright and the wind rustles through the brushwood, the square applauds, and the residents' association opens the gathering with a short speech.
There are small refreshments directly at the church forecourt: wine and juice, sometimes also a first glass of Maibowle (May punch). Those who want to stay longer move on to the Lokal "Zum Faulenzer", where the residents' association traditionally ends the evening. There is space here for a hearty snack, Swabian beer, and chats with the neighbors. This is the true strength of this custom: not the spectacle, but the togetherness.
Brötzingen is not alone. On the same April 30, 2026, the residents' associations in Eutingen (central festival grounds) and Huchenfeld (village square) will also be raising their maypoles. Already on April 25th, Büchenbronn will have its May festival, and Würm will kick things off on April 24th. Anyone who visits all five will get a good impression of the Baden-Swabian spring customs — and discover the very different districts of Pforzheim.
On Thursday, April 30, 2026, the Weststadt-Bürgerverein 1906 e.V. invites you to the traditional maypole raising on the Brötzingen church forecourt. The day begins at 1 p.m. with the joint decoration of the trunk: brushwood, colorful ribbons, the guild signs of the Brötzingen clubs. At 2 p.m., the Technical Services of the City of Pforzheim will arrive and erect the fully decorated maypole with a crane and poles.
After the raising, a toast will be made on the square with drinks and May punch. Those who wish to stay longer are cordially invited to continue the celebration at the pub "Zum Faulenzer". The evening ends relaxedly with a Swabian snack and conversations among neighbors.
Admission to the maypole raising is free. Drinks and food during the reception and at the pub "Zum Faulenzer" are payable. Donations for the Weststadt-Bürgerverein 1906 e.V. are welcome.
Public Transport: City train S5 (Karlsruhe–Bietigheim) stop Pforzheim-Brötzingen Mitte, from there a 2-minute walk.
Car: A8 exit Pforzheim-West, then follow signs for Brötzingen. Parking spaces are scarce on Brötzinger Hauptstraße — public transport recommended.
From 1:00 p.m.: Decorating the maypole. 2:00 p.m.: Ceremonial raising. Afterwards, drinks and cozy get-together at the pub "Zum Faulenzer".
Free admission. Donations for the residents' association are welcome.
