Italian Flair for the Hamm800 Anniversary
In 2026, the city of Hamm celebrates its 800th anniversary with the Hamm800 jubilee year. Over 12 months, cultural, sporting, and social events will be spread out — the Italian Market from June 3rd to 7th is one of the highlights of the summer program. Hamm is investing around 800,000 euros in the anniversary year and bringing a traditional event format to the city center with the Italian Market.
Market Square Becomes a Piazza
The market square at the Pauluskirche, Hamm's central meeting place, will be transformed into an Italian piazza. Stalls under white pavilions will present specialties from Apulia, Sicily, Tuscany, Piedmont, Campania, and Liguria. Fresh mozzarella, Parma ham, Pecorino, burrata, homemade pasta, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, truffles, limoncello, tiramisu, cantucci — a culinary journey through Italy in the heart of Westphalia.
Live Music and Atmosphere
Italian bands and DJs will provide the musical ambiance — from Neapolitan songs and Tarantella to modern Italian pop. Aperitif atmosphere in the evening with Aperol Spritz, Negroni, Hugo. Market mood during the day, promenade in the evening — just like on an Italian piazza in summer.
Sunday Shopping
On Sunday, June 7th, 2026, Hamm's shops will open for Sunday shopping — the Italian Market will thus boost city center visits and offer family shopping in an Italian atmosphere.
Hamm800 — 800 Years of City History
Hamm was founded as a city on March 4th, 1226, next to the Mark Castle of Count Adolf I of the Mark. 2026 is the anniversary year — with an AR smartphone app for virtual city tours, a special stamp from the German Post, a photo competition, and an annual program of events from November 2025 to October 2026.
Light Installation June 3–14
Accompanying the Italian Market, Hamm will feature a light installation in the city center until June 14th — sculptures, projected animations, and colored accents on facades will make the evenings an experience.
Hamm in the Northeast Ruhr Area
Hamm is located at the intersection of the Ruhr area and Münsterland, with around 180,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in Westphalia. The Pauluskirche, Maximilianpark, and Hamm Castle — Hamm has more to offer than its name suggests at first glance.
