About Albersdorf Stone Age Mile

The Stone Age Park Dithmarschen in Albersdorf is one of the most interesting open-air archaeological museums in Northern Germany. Once a summer, the reconstructed Stone Age village transforms into a large action day: at over 25 stations, experimental archaeologists and reenactment craftspeople demonstrate Neolithic techniques – flint knapping, bow making, shamanic experiences, weaving, pottery, baking stick bread. The Stone Age Mile is both family education and hands-on history. The 26th edition will take place in 2026.

Stone Age to Touch – for over 25 years

The Albersdorf Stone Age Mile is not just an action day – it has been the annual highlight of the Stone Age Park Dithmarschen since the early 2000s. The 26th edition will take place in 2026. For over two decades, the action day has developed into one of the largest events for experimental archaeology in Northern Germany, attracting thousands of visitors from Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, and Lower Saxony to Albersdorf every year.

The Stone Age Park as an Extraordinary Setting

The Stone Age Park Dithmarschen is an open-air archaeological museum on the site of an actual Neolithic find spot. True-to-original reconstructions of Stone Age dwellings, workshops, and graves form the framework in which experimental archaeologists make the world of people 4000-6000 years ago tangible. This authentic backdrop makes the Stone Age Mile a special experience – not a performance on neutral ground, but historical practice at a historical site.

What Happens at the Stone Age Mile

Demonstrations and hands-on stations take place simultaneously throughout the park:

  • Flint knapping – how Stone Age people made cutting tools and arrowheads from flint
  • Bow making and archery – traditional bow construction and shooting practice
  • Shamanic experiences – ritual and spiritual practices of the Stone Age
  • Pottery – hand and coil building techniques of pre-industrial ceramics
  • Weaving and spinning – textile production with wool and plant fibers
  • Fire making without matches – spark lighters, friction fire
  • Baking stick bread – bread over an open flame
  • Weapon demonstrations – combat demonstrations with Stone Age weapons
