About Crafts Market Stone Age Park

In the Albersdorf Stone Age Park on the western edge of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, around two dozen specialists transform the archaeological open-air site into a living workshop of prehistory. Flintknapping, blacksmithing, naalbinding, leatherworking, wood carving, and pottery are demonstrated before the eyes of visitors — and at many stalls, you can try your hand. The Market of Ancient Crafts and Arts is one of the most prominent events at the Albersdorf museum and attracts families from the entire Dithmarschen district every year.

Living Stone Age Crafts on the Weekend

The Market of Ancient Crafts and Arts takes place annually in the Albersdorf Stone Age Park — an archaeological open-air museum that showcases the lifestyle of the Stone and Bronze Ages on a reconstructed site at Brutkampsweg. Among longhouses, burial mounds, and a recreated Stone Age village, craftspeople demonstrate techniques passed down through millennia.

What is Demonstrated

The spectrum ranges from flintknapping and blacksmithing over an open charcoal fire to naalbinding, carpet weaving, leatherworking, boat building, fire-starting with sparks, pottery, and cooking over an open fire. Several demonstrators also offer workshops where visitors can take a piece they've made home with them.

Suitable for Families

The market is particularly geared towards children and families. Those who wish can, under guidance, strike their own stone tool, cast a piece of jewelry, or try pottery on a potter's wheel. Traditional food is offered, from stick bread to wild herb stew.

The Stone Age Park as a Cultural Anchor

Albersdorf is located in the Geestland region of Dithmarschen, an area known for its dense prehistoric and early historical settlement — the area around Albersdorf is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most important burial mound and megalithic sites. The Stone Age Park has been consolidating these themes for decades and is a firm fixture in the region's cultural calendar.

Crafts Market Stone Age Park — edition 2026

On August 1st and 2nd, 2026, the Albersdorf Stone Age Park invites you to the annual Market of Ancient Crafts and Arts. For two days, prehistoric and medieval craft techniques will be demonstrated on the archaeological open-air grounds around the reconstructed longhouses — flintknapping, blacksmithing, wood carving, pottery, leatherworking, jewelry making. Hands-on stations for children and adults.

The 2026 market runs from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on both days and is included in the regular museum admission. Registration for in-depth workshops is accepted via [email protected].
