Living Stone Age Crafts on the Weekend
The Market of Ancient Crafts and Arts takes place annually in the Albersdorf Stone Age Park — an archaeological open-air museum that showcases the lifestyle of the Stone and Bronze Ages on a reconstructed site at Brutkampsweg. Among longhouses, burial mounds, and a recreated Stone Age village, craftspeople demonstrate techniques passed down through millennia.
What is Demonstrated
The spectrum ranges from flintknapping and blacksmithing over an open charcoal fire to naalbinding, carpet weaving, leatherworking, boat building, fire-starting with sparks, pottery, and cooking over an open fire. Several demonstrators also offer workshops where visitors can take a piece they've made home with them.
Suitable for Families
The market is particularly geared towards children and families. Those who wish can, under guidance, strike their own stone tool, cast a piece of jewelry, or try pottery on a potter's wheel. Traditional food is offered, from stick bread to wild herb stew.
The Stone Age Park as a Cultural Anchor
Albersdorf is located in the Geestland region of Dithmarschen, an area known for its dense prehistoric and early historical settlement — the area around Albersdorf is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most important burial mound and megalithic sites. The Stone Age Park has been consolidating these themes for decades and is a firm fixture in the region's cultural calendar.
