Indoor festival for Pagan, Viking, Folk, and Black Metal
The Ragnarök Festival has taken place annually in the Stadthalle Lichtenfels since 2004, establishing itself as one of Germany's most significant indoor metal festivals. Over a spring weekend, the Upper Franconian 'basket city' becomes a meeting point for thousands of fans of extreme metal subgenres – the number of visitors represents a considerable portion of the town's population.
The musical spectrum includes Black Metal, Death Metal, Post-Black Metal, Pagan Metal, Viking Metal, and Folk Metal. Around 30 bands from across Europe perform on two stages. For the 21st edition in 2026, Hypocrisy, Abbath, and Septicflesh are among the headliners, complemented by acts such as Arkona, Einherjer, Harakiri For The Sky, Vomitory, and many more.
As a purely indoor festival, Ragnarök offers weather-independent conditions and an intense club atmosphere. For many fans, the weekend in Lichtenfels is a fixed annual pilgrimage and a hub for the international Pagan and Viking Metal community.
Lichtenfels is the district town of the district of the same name in the Upper Franconian administrative region of Bavaria, known as the 'German Basket City'. The Ragnarök Festival carries the town's name into the European metal scene and is a unique cultural event in the Franconian event calendar.
