The Mechernich Herbstkirmes — Tradition with Mining Heritage
The Mechernich Herbstkirmes is the traditional autumn fair of the Eifel town and one of the most important dates in the Mechernich event calendar. From Sunday, August 30 to Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the city center between the Town Hall and Nyonsplatz will be transformed into a four-day fairground with carousels, stalls, and a unique traditional highlight.
The "Kirmesknochen" — The Saturday Highlight
The unique selling point of the Mechernich fair is the Kirmesknochen — a historically rooted custom that refers to the town's mining tradition. On Saturday at 5:30 PM, the Kirmesknochen is ceremoniously unearthed – accompanied by the Bergkapelle 1870 (one of the oldest brass bands in the Eifel) and the Vussemer Men's Choir, who sing the traditional Bergmannslied. This ritual connects today's Volksfest fair with Mechernich's industrial past as a mining town.
Mechernich — The Mining Town of the North Eifel
For centuries, Mechernich was the center of lead mining in the North Eifel – until the closure of the last mine in 1957. Today, the Mechernich Mining Museum commemorates this past. With the Kirmesknochen ritual, the fair actively integrates this identity into contemporary city life.
Sunday — Festive Church Service and Sunday Opening
Sunday, August 31, 2026, is the central festival day: 10:45 AM Festive Church Service in the parish church of St. Johannes Baptist, followed by a solemn procession to the cemetery for the commemoration of the deceased. The fairground will be in full swing in parallel, and retail stores will open as part of the Sunday opening.
