Note
Sturdy footwear and warm clothing recommended. In case of heavy rain, the program will continue in the covered castle halls. Castle is well accessible (courtyard is level), outer bailey is slightly hilly.
Moated Castle in Advent Light
Burg Satzvey is one of the last fully preserved medieval moated castles in Germany – complete with its surrounding moat, castle tower, outer bailey, and small half-timbered buildings. What becomes the stage for jousting tournaments in early summer transforms into a warmly lit Christmas world on Advent weekends. Fairy lights strung between towers, wooden stalls with straw bales, and small bonfires in front of each stand, the aroma of mulled wine from open cauldrons, and the scents of gingerbread and chestnuts wafting across the courtyard – the atmosphere is medieval Christmas worthy of a film.
Four Advent Weekends
The Burgweihnacht runs for four consecutive Advent weekends: November 28–29, December 5–6, December 12–13, and December 19–20, 2026. This means: Saturdays from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Sundays from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM are the opening hours. Each weekend features its own daily program – multiple performances of the nativity play each day, workshops for children, and the boot filling every Saturday at 3 PM (St. Nicholas fills the boots brought by children with gifts).
Crafts and Artisanship
What sets the Burgweihnacht apart from a standard Christmas market is the strict selection of exhibitors. Here, merchants and artisans exclusively sell self-made or handmade items: nativity scenes in all sizes (from small Erzgebirge carvings to large life-sized cribs), wooden toys based on medieval models (wooden horses, knights, castle models), handmade Christmas tree ornaments, natural soaps and beeswax candles, spices, traditional baked goods, and incense. Most exhibitors come from Germany, some from the Netherlands and Belgium, all with a genuine connection to craftsmanship.
Medieval Nativity Plays
A program highlight is the medieval nativity plays: several performances daily in the castle courtyard or chapel, with actors in historical costumes. The Christmas story is told in a production that deliberately maintains a medieval flair – not a saccharine modern Christmas fairytale, but an older, more serious narrative level. For families with children, it's a good introduction to the ancient Christmas narrative.
Workshop of the Christmas Elves
The Christmas Workshop in the outer bailey is designed for children: here, they craft Christmas tree ornaments, straw doll angels, and small gingerbread men together with “elves” (actors in elf costumes). In the castle bakery, children can paint gingerbread – with colorful icing they apply themselves. The Saturday boot filling at 3 PM is the absolute highlight: children bring their boots, and St. Nicholas himself fills them with sweets and small gifts.
Mechernich and the Eifel in Winter
Those traveling to the Eifel for the Burgweihnacht can extend their weekend meaningfully: the Vulkaneifel with its maars is particularly beautiful in its winter attire, the historic old town of Bad Münstereifel (an outlet town!) is 20 minutes away, and the Eifel-Steig trail offers open routes even in winter. Mechernich itself boasts the interesting Bleibergmuseum.
