Medieval Knights Festival Autumn at Burg Satzvey on two weekends in August/September 2026 with show "Valkyria" and horse fire spectacle
Burg Satzvey in the Satzvey district of Mechernich (Euskirchen district, Cologne administrative region) is one of the best-preserved moated castles in the Rhineland. First mentioned in the 13th century, expanded to its current form since the 15th century, and restored in the 19th century, the castle is now privately owned by the Beissel von Gymnich family and is established as a venue for knights' tournaments, events, and a tourist attraction. With its towers, moat, and medieval courtyard, it offers the authentic backdrop indispensable for the Knights Festival.
The Knights Festival at Burg Satzvey is among the oldest and most established medieval events in Germany. Several dates per year — Whitsun Knights Festival, Autumn Knights Festival, and Castle Christmas — are spread throughout the year. The autumn edition, held over two weekends in late summer, concludes the open-air season and is considered particularly atmospheric, as the onset of dusk creates a magical ambiance for the festival evenings.
The 2026 autumn edition is headlined by the equestrian show "Valkyria" — an elaborately staged horse spectacle featuring stunts, fire effects, and combat choreography. Scandinavian mythology serves as the narrative framework, while professional stunt riders, pyrotechnics, and musical accompaniment create an experience appealing to both families and adults. Several performances daily — start times and schedule available on-site and on the festival website.
Alongside the show, a bustling medieval market with around 70 traders and craftsmen takes place on the castle grounds. Blacksmiths, leatherworkers, glassblowers, weavers, potters, basket makers, jewelers, and storytellers set up their stalls in the shadow of the castle walls. The assortment ranges from simple medieval everyday items (leather pouches, drinking horns, wooden tableware) to high-quality handcrafted swords and jewelry. Tastings of mead (honey wine), honey beer, and medieval dishes complement the experience.
Several historical camp groups set up their tents in the castle park, showcasing the daily life of a medieval community over the weekend — from baking bread and washing clothes to archery. These authentic camp scenes distinguish Burg Satzvey from many pseudo-medieval events — here, historical substance is combined with historical practice.
By car via the A 1 (exit Mechernich/Bad Münstereifel) or A 553/B 51 — parking is available at the castle grounds. By train: Satzvey station on the Cologne-Trier line (RE 22, RB 24), about a 10-minute walk to the castle from the station. Around a 45-minute train journey from Cologne — traveling by train is the most relaxed option, as traffic volume at the castle grounds can be high on festival days.
The 2026 autumn edition brings two consecutive weekends of medieval spectacle to the Eifel foothills. The central show "Valkyria" — an elaborately staged horse and fire spectacle — will be performed multiple times daily on both weekends. Surrounding this, a bustling medieval market with around 70 traders and craftsmen will be set up.
The double run over two weekends — typical for the autumn festival at Burg Satzvey — gives visitors from the Rhineland, Ruhr area, and the Eifel the opportunity to choose a flexible date. The latter half of September, with shorter daylight hours, also allows for more atmospheric evening performances.
