Reading with Prof. Dr. Dietrich Grönemeyer as part of the lit.eifel literary series
For years, the association lit.eifel e.V. has been presenting a literature program that utilizes the geographical and cultural characteristics of the Eifel region. Instead of holding classic readings in bookstores, authors perform in castles, abbeys, palaces, libraries, and industrial monuments in the Eifel. "Literature in a new form in unusual places in the Eifel" – this is the association's self-image.
The 2026 season spans several months (April to November) and leads through various Eifel locations: Carsten Henn reads on May 22 in Nideggen, Pierre Jarawan on June 10 in Blankenheim, Kai Meyer on September 24 in Bad Münstereifel. Mechernich is part of the season as a September date.
On this Wednesday evening, Prof. Dr. Dietrich Grönemeyer will appear in Mechernich. The physician, author, and brother of Herbert Grönemeyer is a well-known voice in the German health and education debate. His book “Natürlich Altern!” deals with aging from a medical-holistic perspective: an optimistic, preventive look at the second half of life. The reading begins at 7 PM.
Mechernich is a town with around 27,000 inhabitants in the District of Euskirchen, southwest of Cologne on the edge of the Voreifel. The region is characterized by historical lead mining (the Bleihalde near Mechernich is an industrial heritage site) and tourism centered around the Eifel. Mechernich also became known for the St. Bruder Klaus Chapel by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor (Wachendorf-Iversheim) – an architectural pilgrimage site.
Accompanying the 2026 season, lit.eifel is awarding the Eifel Youth Literature Prize for the 13th time. The theme for 2026 is "Hoffen & Träumen" (Hoping & Dreaming) and is aimed at young writers from the region. In this way, the association connects top-tier adult literature with the promotion of young talent.
Tickets are sold through the platform ticket-regional.de. The exact venue in Mechernich (town church, community center, or a historical site) will be announced on lit-eifel.de. Mechernich is easily accessible via the Cologne–Trier railway line (Eifelstrecke).
The Mechernich date is one of approximately 15 venues for the 2026 season of lit.eifel. Dietrich Grönemeyer – physician, non-fiction author, and advocate of a holistic health approach – presents his book on life phases and aging. The reading will be complemented by a discussion and audience questions.
