Pentecost festival with church service, flea market, and suckling pig in the Stadtpark
Garding is located in the middle of the Eiderstedt peninsula, one of Schleswig-Holstein's most peculiar landscapes between the Eider river, the North Sea, and the Wadden Sea. Here, in the shadow of the church where the Eiderstedt pastor and poet Theodor Mommsen spent his childhood years, the town celebrates the Pfingstjubel every year on Pentecost Sunday. The name alone reveals the mix of piety and folk festival that characterizes this day.
The day begins with a Low German (Plattdeutscher) church service — in Plattdeutsch, the vernacular of North Friesland, which is still actively maintained here. Afterwards, the community flea market opens its stalls: residents of Eiderstedt from all generations sell bric-a-brac, homemade goods, and items for browsing. Anyone looking for a bargain or simply wanting to enjoy the rural flair will find it here.
From midday onwards, the focus is on families. There are games for children on the lawns of the Stadtpark, live music accompanies the stage program, and the traditional suckling pig feast becomes a convivial highlight. You sit at long tables with locals from Garding, Eiderstedt, and holidaymakers, talking about the wind and weather, and about the Wadden Sea hikes that start nearby.
Garding belongs to the district of Nordfriesland and is located between St. Peter-Ording, Tönning, and Husum. The Pfingstjubel is part of the peninsula's rich festival calendar, which ranges from the Biikebrennen (bonfire festival) in February to the Wadden Sea runs in summer. Here you experience a North German Pentecost tradition that has long been lost in big cities.
Garding invites you to the traditional Pfingstjubel in the Stadtpark on Pentecost Sunday 2026. As every year, the day begins with a Low German church service, followed by the community flea market, a colorful family festival with live music, and the traditional suckling pig feast. An event that brings together the entire Eiderstedt region — admission is free.
The exact stage program will be published by the town of Garding shortly before the date on garding.de.
By train from Husum or St. Peter-Ording to Garding (Marschbahn line), the Stadtpark is within walking distance. By car via B202 or L33.
Free. Suckling pig and drinks for a fee.
