Four Villages, One Market

The Weihnachtsmarkt der Eidergemeinden is a deliberately collaborative project of the four small Eider communities of Dörpling, Pahlen, Tielenhemme, and Wallen. The villages are located in the Dithmarschen district along the upper Eider, south of Heide. Instead of each holding a small market on their own, they join forces once a year to organize a larger Advent market together.

Pahlen Construction Yard as the Venue

The venue is the Bauhof Pahlen — an easily accessible, spacious area that offers enough room for the stalls of the four communities. Here, local clubs, craftspeople, and farm direct marketers set up their booths — mulled wine, roasted almonds, regional sausages, homemade jams, Advent decorations, and gifts from workshops in the region.

Popular Meeting Point for the Four Communities

For the approximately 1,500 inhabitants of the four villages, the market is one of the few major events of the year. Families from Pahlen, Dörpling, Tielenhemme, and Wallen meet, chat, and let the children wait for Santa Claus at the mulled wine stand. The market serves as a showcase for regional products and a form of active community cooperation — four administrations, one joint festival.

The Eider, Centerpiece and Identity

The Eider, at almost 190 kilometers, is the longest river in Schleswig-Holstein and originates in the region around Bordesholm. In the Eider communities in southern Dithmarschen, it is less a river and more a marshland flow — calm, wide, controlled by pumping stations. The Christmas market combines this landscape identity with traditional Advent customs: a typically North German format that grows a little each year.
