The grand main Volksfest in the district of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm
The Pfaffenhofen Volksfest is explicitly designated as one of the central Volksfeste in the district of Pfaffenhofen in the 2026 event calendar. It is the seasonal highlight of a series of about fourteen Volksfeste that create meeting places between May and September and make the Hallertau region an experienceable cultural space.
The district town of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm is located in the heart of the world's largest contiguous hop-growing area – the Hallertau. This geographical specialty also shapes the Volksfest: hops, beer, and brewing tradition are part of the event's DNA. Breweries from the region supply the festival tent, and hop culture is part of the local identity, which is repeatedly mentioned in the festival program.
With its unusual duration of twelve days, the Pfaffenhofen Volksfest ranks among the larger Upper Bavarian Volksfeste. Bavarian tradition is not presented here as a folkloric show but is an organic part of the festival culture: Bavarian Maß (liter of beer), Brotzeit (snack), Tracht (traditional clothing), Blasmusik (brass band music). The program structure is similar to the major Volksfeste in the region – beer tapping on the opening day, family days with reduced prices, a festive parade on the first weekend, seniors' day, and a concluding fireworks display.
The venue is the Volksfest grounds in Pfaffenhofen. With a festival tent, an amusement park area, and large parking spaces, it is designed for the annual festival operations. Its location on the outskirts of the town allows for arrival by both car and S-Bahn (S2 Munich – Pfaffenhofen – Ingolstadt).
In September, the Pfaffenhofen Volksfest traditionally concludes the main season of Upper Bavarian Volksfeste and overlaps with the Munich Oktoberfest, without noticeably diminishing the Pfaffenhofen festival's appeal to its audience. On the contrary: those seeking an authentic Bavarian Volksfest, far from the tourist hustle of the Wiesn, will find it here.
The 2026 Volksfest in Pfaffenhofen spans twelve festival days, starting on Friday, September 4, with the beer tapping ceremony and official opening, and concluding on Tuesday, September 15. The festival program follows the typical structure of a main Upper Bavarian Volksfest: a beer tent with live music, an amusement park area with modern and classic rides, market and food stalls, as well as traditional days with a festive parade, a seniors' afternoon, and family time.
The event is organized by the City of Pfaffenhofen a.d.Ilm in cooperation with the regional municipal company for structural development. A detailed daily program and beer tent schedule are usually published in August.
The exact band lineup in the beer tent and the precise 2026 daily program will be announced by the City of Pfaffenhofen on the official channels a few weeks before the festival begins.
