Live am Rhein — the Season Opener on the Rhine Promenade
As the days get longer and outdoor dining enters its peak season, Live am Rhein traditionally heralds the open-air season in Leverkusen's Neuland-Park. The Pentecost edition on May 14th/15th, 2026, is the first major live music event of the year in the park — and thus the first occasion for locals to combine live music with drinks and street food right on the Rhine promenade when the weather is warm.
Neuland-Park — Leverkusen's Festival Park
Neuland-Park is Leverkusen's central open-air event space. An approximately 20-hectare park along the Rhine, formerly an industrial site of the Bayer Group, it was transformed for the 2005 State Garden Show in the 2000s and is now home to numerous festivals and open-air events. With its direct Rhine location, expansive lawns, and the Sparkassen-Arena as a small concert stage, the park is one of the most attractive open-air locations in the Rhineland between Cologne and Düsseldorf.
Pentecost 2026 — Two Days of Live Music
Thursday, May 14th, 2026, is Christi Himmelfahrt (Father's Day) — traditionally one of the busiest open-air days of the year. Live am Rhein uses this day as its kick-off with a full day's program of local bands. Friday, May 15th, concludes the Pentecost edition with the weekend's opening day. The performing artists are primarily regional bands from the Cologne-Düsseldorf corridor — ranging from cover rock and Schlager to singer-songwriter acts. The exact band lineup for 2026 will be announced by Schmitz Veranstaltungen shortly before the festival.
Free Admission — Schmitz Concept
Like all summer Live am Rhein events, the Pentecost edition is free. Organizer Rainer Schmitz Veranstaltungen & Catering finances the festival entirely through gastronomy and beverage sales. This business model — low-threshold open-airs without an admission barrier — has proven very successful in Leverkusen, regularly attracting several thousand visitors per day.
Family Program and Gastronomy
In addition to live music, Live am Rhein offers a family program with children's attractions such as carousels, trampolines, and craft stands. The food ranges from classic fairground fare (Bratwurst, Currywurst, fries) to modern street food offerings. Bars serve beer, Kölsch, wine, Aperol Spritz, and soft drinks. Seating is partly on the lawn (picnic style), partly at set-up beer tables and benches.
Live am Rhein as a Series
The Pentecost edition is just one of several Live am Rhein events throughout the year. Schmitz Veranstaltungen organizes further open-air weekends over the summer, including the Weinfest am Rhein (Wine Festival on the Rhine) in early September. This makes Live am Rhein one of the most successful event franchises in Leverkusen — accessible, family-friendly, reliably free.
