Braunshausen – a district of Nonnweiler
Braunshausen is a district of the municipality of Nonnweiler in the St. Wendel district. With a good 600 inhabitants, it is a small village in the Saarland, but like many villages in the Saarland, it maintains an active community life. The annual Kirmes in early August is one of the most important social events in the village.
Occasion: Feast day of the Church of the Assumption of Mary
The Kirmes Braunshausen is celebrated in memory of the laying of the foundation stone of the Catholic parish church of Maria Himmelfahrt – a classic feast day, which in the Catholic Saarland is traditionally associated with a village fair. The church is still the centrepiece of the village today and shapes its image.
Program with Tradition
The documented program of the Kirmes Braunshausen follows a fixed schedule that has evolved over the years:
- 10:00 AM — Mass in the community centre with the Hochwaldchor
- 11:00 AM — Frühschoppen with the MVB-Revival-Band
- 2:00 PM — Children's entertainment and a magician's performance
- 2:30 PM — Coffee and cake from the community kitchen
- 3:30 PM — 7th Braunshausen Schock Championship (Saarland dice game)
- 6:00 PM — Live music with the Braunshausen Music Association (MV Braunshausen)
- 8:00 PM–10:00 PM — Happy Hour at the cocktail bar
Braunshausen Community Association
The organizer is the Braunshausen Community Association – an alliance of all local clubs that jointly organize the Kirmes. Special mention deserves the Hochwaldchor, whose performances musically shape the festival, and the Musikverein Braunshausen, which provides the evening program.
In the Hochwald Nature Park
Braunshausen is located on the edge of the Hochwald, one of the most wooded low mountain ranges in Germany. The region is a hiking area, and the nearby Bostalsee lake is a tourist highlight. Visitors to the Kirmes can combine their stay with hikes or a stop at the reservoir.
