One of Europe's largest improvisation theatre festivals, annually in March on several Berlin stages
Improvisation theatre has been an integral part of the independent theatre scene since the 1980s. In Berlin, Die Gorillas, an ensemble since 1997, have significantly contributed to the genre. Since 2001, the troupe has organised the IMPRO – International Improfestival, which has grown into one of Europe's most important improvisation theatre festivals over the past two decades.
Over ten festival days, ensembles and solo artists from Europe, North America, and other world regions showcase their work on several Berlin stages. The central venue is the Ratibor Theater on Cuvrystraße in Kreuzberg, the home stage of Die Gorillas. Additional Berlin venues are included depending on the festival format.
Unlike text-based theatre, improvisation theatre is created in the moment: ensembles perform completely unrehearsed scenes, often based on audience suggestions and prompts. The "philosophy" of Die Gorillas — acceptance, trust, saying yes, flexibility, listening, building on others' ideas — represents an understanding of theatre that prioritises risk, presence, and joy of playing.
From the outset, the curatorial focus has been on internationally outstanding improv ensembles, primarily from Europe and North America, but also from Asia, Latin America, and Australia. For many ensembles, IMPRO is one of the most important contact points in Europe. Workshops, late-night formats, and special shows complement the evening stage programme.
As every year since 2001, IMPRO opens its ten festival days in March. The exact edition — according to the Die Gorillas website, it will follow the pattern of previous years — and the precise dates will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival on improfestival.de and via the Facebook page. Experience suggests the festival usually falls in the second half of March.
