Christmas market meets mill Christmas along the Kulturmühle and harbour terraces
Until 2024, two separate Advent events took place in Parchim: the traditional Christmas market around St. Mary's Church and the Mühlenweihnacht (Mill Christmas) in the Kulturmühle directly on the city harbour. Since 2025, both formats have merged into a cohesive Advent event stretching from Fischerdamm across the courtyard of the Irish Pub to the harbour terraces on the Elde river. The restructuring was prompted by construction work at St. Mary's Church, but the new concept proved so successful that it will be continued in 2026.
Classic Christmas market stalls line the festival mile: handmade goods from regional craftspeople, ceramics, wooden toys, Christmas decorations, knitwear, fairy lights, dried flower arrangements. The food and drink offerings range from roasted almonds, bratwurst, potato pancakes, crêpes and Mecklenburg specialties to sweet Christmas pastries and, of course, mulled wine, punch and non-alcoholic hot drinks.
The Kulturmühle Parchim — a cultural centre opened in 2025 in a historic mill building directly on the city harbour — forms the covered centrepiece of the market. It hosts staircase concerts with regional choirs and soloists, fairy tale readings for children, small light shows and craft activities. The inner courtyard offers further market stalls with "favourite stalls and treats from the classic Christmas market," as stated in the city's programme.
The harbour terraces on the Elde river — directly at the basin near the bank — feature a family area with a children's carousel, pony rides, face painting and small play activities. The reflection of the lights in the Elde water gives the market a special charm that the previous location at St. Mary's Church lacked. The market opens on Fridays at 3:00 PM with Frau Holle and Santa Claus — a Parchim tradition maintained for decades.
Following its successful debut in 2025, the Parchim Christmas Market will again take place in 2026 as a combined "Christmas Market meets Mill Christmas" format. The exact dates are subject to final programme planning — traditionally, the 2nd Advent weekend is the fixed date, which for 2026 means Friday 4th to Sunday 6th December.
The programme follows the proven concept: Opening on Friday at 3:00 PM by Frau Holle and Santa Claus, market open all day Saturday and Sunday along the festival mile from Fischerdamm to the harbour terraces. Staircase concerts and fairy tale readings in the Kulturmühle, family area with children's carousel and pony rides.
The exact date and full programme will be published at the end of October 2026 at parchim.de/advent.
