800 Years Parchim — Nine Days of City History and Present

Parchim was first mentioned in a document in 1226, and therefore celebrates its 800th city anniversary in 2026. Unlike a classic birthday party, the district town of Ludwigslust-Parchim has deliberately extended the program to a full festival week: from May 30 to June 7, 2026, the city area will become a stage, with nine thematic days, each dedicated to an aspect of urban identity — market, art, children, film, sports, politics, concert, nature, folk festival.

Day by Day Through the Festival Week

  • May 30, 2026 (Sat) — Opening: Regional market at Schuhmarkt with producers from Ludwigslust-Parchim, exhibition opening at the City Museum, in the evening a theater premiere at the Kulturmühle.
  • May 31, 2026 (Sun) — City Tour: Guided tours through the historic old town, St. Mary's Church, St. George's Church, Helmuth von Moltke Birthplace.
  • June 1, 2026 (Mon, International Children's Day) — Grand Children's Festival in the city center, hands-on activities, games, children's concerts.
  • June 2, 2026 (Tue) — Open-Air Cinema and Sports Festival: Premiere of a city film for the anniversary, concurrent sports festival on the Wallanlage (fortifications).
  • June 3, 2026 (Wed) — Politics and Festival Concert: Ceremonial city council meeting, in the evening a festival concert at the Kulturmühle.
  • June 4, 2026 (Thu) — Hiking Day: Guided hikes along the Elde river, open city library with a special program.
  • June 5–7, 2026 (Fri–Sun) — 42nd Parchim City Festival: Amusement park rides, two stages at Alter Markt and Stadthaus steps, festive parade on Sunday at 2:00 PM with 2,000 participants.

Beyond the Festival Week

The anniversary year does not end with the festival week. Important follow-up highlights include the Festspiele MV concert on July 1 in St. George's Church, the first Parchim Culture Night on September 26, and the traditional Martinimarkt from November 6 to 9. The city motto 'We show who Parchim is today' will thus be heard and seen throughout the entire calendar year 2026.

Identity and Memory

Parchim, as the birthplace of Field Marshal General Helmuth von Moltke, as a historic Hanseatic city, and former seat of the Mecklenburg state parliament, cultivates a multifaceted culture of remembrance. The festival week consciously moves between historical reference (exhibition, market tradition) and a statement of the present (city film, parade motto, Kulturmühle as a modern community center). A city of 17,000 inhabitants that stages its 800th anniversary not as a nostalgic event, but as a self-affirmation.
