Nine-day festival week for the 800th city anniversary of the district town Parchim
Parchim was first mentioned in a document in 1226, and therefore celebrates its 800th city anniversary in 2026. Unlike a classic birthday party, the district town of Ludwigslust-Parchim has deliberately extended the program to a full festival week: from May 30 to June 7, 2026, the city area will become a stage, with nine thematic days, each dedicated to an aspect of urban identity — market, art, children, film, sports, politics, concert, nature, folk festival.
The anniversary year does not end with the festival week. Important follow-up highlights include the Festspiele MV concert on July 1 in St. George's Church, the first Parchim Culture Night on September 26, and the traditional Martinimarkt from November 6 to 9. The city motto 'We show who Parchim is today' will thus be heard and seen throughout the entire calendar year 2026.
Parchim, as the birthplace of Field Marshal General Helmuth von Moltke, as a historic Hanseatic city, and former seat of the Mecklenburg state parliament, cultivates a multifaceted culture of remembrance. The festival week consciously moves between historical reference (exhibition, market tradition) and a statement of the present (city film, parade motto, Kulturmühle as a modern community center). A city of 17,000 inhabitants that stages its 800th anniversary not as a nostalgic event, but as a self-affirmation.
The Festwoche 800 Years Parchim starts on May 30, 2026, with a regional market at Schuhmarkt, the exhibition opening at the City Museum, and a theater premiere at the Kulturmühle. Each day of the following week is dedicated to a thematic focus — city tour, children's festival, city film, sports festival, festival concert, hiking day — culminating in the 42nd City Festival from June 5 to 7 with a parade on Sunday at 2:00 PM.
