Christmas market in Mainz's southernmost district on the 1st weekend of Advent
Mainz-Ebersheim, with its approximately 6,000 inhabitants, is the southernmost district of Mainz. Characterized by viticulture on the Rhenish-Hessian hills, agricultural farms, and an active club scene, Ebersheim has retained its village character to this day. The Ebersheimer Adventsmarkt on the first weekend of Advent is an expression of this independent identity: a club-supported market that is entirely dedicated to neighborhood, Rhenish-Hessian conviviality, and the promotion of local club activities.
Wooden stalls, decorated fir trees, and fairy lights line the market square and the central streets. The catering is in the hands of the Ebersheim clubs: sports clubs, the fire department, parishes, the carnival club, music clubs, and winegrower families share the stalls. Mulled wine made from Ebersheim wines, homemade soups, potato pancakes, bratwurst, kreppel, and coffee with homemade cake provide for the guests. Stalls with Advent arrangements, crafts, honey, knitwear, and small gifts from Ebersheim and Rheinhessen complete the offering.
A diverse program unfolds on a stage in the center of the market. The men's choir, the brass choir of the Protestant parish, the children's choirs of the elementary school, and the music clubs provide atmospheric performances throughout the afternoon. The highlight for families is the visit of St. Nicholas on Saturday, who distributes gifts to the children. On Sunday, brass ensembles and a joint Advent sing-along shape the atmosphere.
The proceeds from the market go towards Ebersheim's youth and club work. Visitors often combine a visit to the market with a walk through the old town center and a glass of Ebersheim wine. The Ebersheimer Adventsmarkt is a reliable start to the Advent season in the Rhenish-Hessian south of Mainz and an invitation to get to know one of Mainz's most charming districts in its most beautiful season.
