800 Years of Parchim — The City Festival as the Crowning Glory
Parchim, the district town of Ludwigslust-Parchim and birthplace of Helmuth von Moltke, celebrates its 800th anniversary in 2026. First documented in 1226, the Mecklenburg city on the Elde has asserted itself as a center of trade and administration over centuries. The 42nd Parchim City Festival from June 5 to 7, 2026, is the final highlight of the entire festival week (May 30 – June 7) and more than just an ordinary folk festival (Volksfest): it is a civic self-portrait with musical, gastronomic, and ritual dimensions.
Two Stages, One Festival Mile
On two stages—one at the Alter Markt directly in front of the town hall, one at the Stadthaustreppen—concerts, dance, and cultural performances will run continuously over three days. Program highlights include pop and rock cover bands, regional artists from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, folk, and Schlager acts. During the day, family activities dominate: children's carousels, craft stalls, small performances. The funfair with a Ferris wheel, dodgems, carousels, and game stalls stretches throughout the entire city center. Gastronomic stands along the inner-city ring road offer classic folk festival fare: Bratwurst, Wurzelbrot, crêpes, Schmalzbrot, Mecklenburg specialties, and of course, regional beer.
The Parade — 2,000 People, One Self-Image
The actual highlight of the anniversary city festival is the parade on Sunday, June 7, 2026, starting at 2:00 PM. Unlike classic historical parades, the city of Parchim consciously refrains from a purely historical reenactment—the motto is "We show who Parchim is today." Over 2,000 participants from clubs, schools, companies, cultural institutions, and private life will create floats and walking groups that showcase Parchim as a vibrant present. The procession starts at the Alter Markt and winds through the historic old town, past the Marienkirche, town hall, and Stadthaus, returning to the main stage location.
A Festival in the Anniversary Year
The 42nd City Festival is embedded in the "800 Years of Parchim" festival week, which begins on May 30 with a regional market at the Schuhmarkt and an exhibition opening at the City Museum. Throughout the anniversary year, other events include concerts by the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival in July, the first Parchim Culture Night on September 26, and the traditional Martinimarkt (November 6–9), complementing the series of anniversary events.
