Since 1981, it has brought around 130 ceramic artists from across the continent to the only small town in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for Ceramics every year in June. The 46th edition will take place in 2026 – a must-attend event for all lovers of contemporary ceramic art.
Date: Saturday, June 6, 2026, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM, and Sunday, June 7, 2026, 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The market zone extends for about 500 meters through the city center. Highlight 2026: the 6th German Open Pottery Championship. Free admission.
Höhr-Grenzhausen is the capital of the Kannenbäckerland, a region in the Westerwald that has been famous for its stoneware production since the Middle Ages. Today, the town is the only small town member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the category of Crafts and Folk Art. The Higher Vocational School for Ceramics, the Institute for Artistic Ceramics and Glass, the Westerwald Ceramics Museum, and numerous independent studios make the town a unique ceramic cluster in Europe.
The European Ceramics Market was launched in 1981 to showcase contemporary ceramic art on a large, internationally oriented platform. 45 years later, it is one of the most prestigious markets of its kind in Europe. The strict selection of exhibitors guarantees a high artistic level — from traditional Westerwald salt-glaze stoneware to the avant-garde of contemporary ceramics.
On the approximately 500-meter-long market route, about 130 exhibitors from all over Europe present their work. The range includes: functional ceramics (dishes, cups, bowls, jugs), decorative ceramics and decorative objects, Westerwald salt-glaze stoneware in contemporary and traditional interpretations, clay pipes crafted with loving historical detail, ceramic jewelry and sculptures, as well as experimental pieces from the international ceramics scene.
A special highlight in 2026 is the 6th German Open Pottery Championship. Top potters from all over Germany compete against each other: speed, precision, and creativity on the potter's wheel are judged in various disciplines. An exciting live demonstration that delights the audience.
The market route uses the city center of Höhr-Grenzhausen as a charming backdrop. Between the market stalls, the city center's gastronomy invites you to take a break, and the Westerwald Ceramics Museum offers deeper insights. The market is free to enter — you only pay for the items purchased at the stalls.
