Winter market weekend around Hohnsensee with light installations, regional gastronomy, and crafts
When the Christmas markets are dismantled and January is usually characterized by retreat and indoor life, the Wintermeile Hildesheim sets an unusual tone: a winter weekend deliberately focused on outdoor space, light design, and communal experience. The main venue is the spacious area around Hohnsensee, south of the city center, which, with the adjacent Hohnsensee parking lot, paths, and green spaces, offers an ideal backdrop for stalls, stages, and light art.
Unlike classic winter or Advent markets, the Wintermeile focuses on a reduced, curated presentation: selected restaurateurs, craftspeople, and producers from the city and district of Hildesheim present their offerings in an ambiance of light arches, fire pits, and atmospherically illuminated trees. Mulled wine, punch, hearty winter dishes, and sweet specialties are naturally included, as are stalls with warm textiles, ceramics, and small winter gifts.
The Wintermeile is not intended as a mass event, but as a quiet meeting place. Those arriving from the city center at Hohnsensee should see the lights from afar and find a pace that allows for conversations, strolls, and longer stays. Small musical accents, acoustic sets, and walking acts accompany the market without turning it into a classic city festival.
Hildesheim, with its approximately 100,000 inhabitants and the two UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Mariendom and St. Michaeliskirche, is a city with a rich event culture. The Wintermeile rounds off the annual calendar in January, complementing traditional formats such as the Volksfest and Schützenfest, the Marktplatz music series, or the Christmas market with an explicitly winter outdoor accent. It is supported by Hildesheim Marketing GmbH together with local partners and is one of the newer formats in the city marketing program.
Families, couples, groups, and individual guests alike will find something to enjoy: children play in the soft light of the installations, adults chat at the standing tables, and visitors from the surrounding area use the weekend for a trip to Hildesheim. The combination of the Hohnsensee water area, the tree-lined shore, and urban light design gives the Wintermeile its unmistakable character.
In 2026, the Wintermeile will focus on atmosphere and regional actors. Hildesheim Marketing GmbH, together with its partners, curates the range of stalls and ensures a consistent lighting concept that showcases the Hohnsensee and its shore paths.
Market stalls with warm food and drinks, smaller stage performances, walking acts, and a lighting concept that makes the paths around the water safe and atmospheric are planned. For families, hands-on activities are provided to encourage winter outdoor play.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
