Kick-off of the Rütenbrock event season in Emsland — tradition, king's shooting, and conviviality on the second weekend of July
Rütenbrock is a district of the municipality of Twist in the southwestern Emsland, located directly on the Dutch border. The history of the place is closely linked to the reclamation of the moor and the resulting civic self-awareness. The Bürgerschützenverein, which still significantly shapes the social life of the village today, also developed from this tradition. The annual Schützenfest is much more than a club event: it is the identity-forming summer event where the village community reaffirms its roots and togetherness.
The Schützenfest 2026 will take place on Saturday, July 11th, and Sunday, July 12th, at the Schützenplatz Rütenbrock. The event begins on Saturday afternoon with the assembly of the marksmen, a festive march through the village, and the entry into the festival tent. A dance band will play there until the early hours for the Schützenball (marksmen's ball), which unites club members, guests, and the youth of the village. On Sunday, the king's shooting will be the focus — the sporting competition to determine the new majesty of the club. This is followed by the proclamation of the king, the king's dinner, and a festive conclusion in the tent.
The king's shooting is the heart of every Emsland Schützenfest. In the shooting competition for the wooden bird, candidates vie for the dignity of Schützenkönig (shooting king), who represents the club for one year. Whoever shoots down the last splinter of the bird is proclaimed king and chooses his queen. The dignity of king means both honor and obligation: the reigning king wears the king's chain, dedicated by his predecessors, and represents the club at the guest festivals of neighboring shooting clubs.
Rütenbrock is located in the heart of the Schützenfest landscape of the southern Emsland. Numerous clubs from the surrounding districts of Twist and Lathen maintain reciprocal visits and joint festival parades. With the Rütenbrock festival on the second weekend of July, the intensive high season of local traditional festivals begins for many shooting enthusiasts from Twist, Hebelermeer, Schöninghsdorf, and the surrounding villages.
The 2026 program follows the proven schedule of previous years and is divided into two festival days. Saturday is dedicated to the grand Schützenball, while Sunday is reserved for the sporting highlight — the king's shooting — and the proclamation of the new majesty. The club will publish more precise times and detailed information in advance on its website and through the local press.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
