About Schützenfest Rütenbrock

The Schützenfest Rütenbrock of the Bürgerschützenverein (Citizens' Shooting Association) traditionally kicks off the festival season in the southern Emsland every year. On a weekend in July, members, families, and guests gather around the Schützenplatz (shooting ground) in the Rütenbrock district of Twist to celebrate one of the region's oldest customs. Saturday is traditionally dedicated to the Schützenfest with a festival tent, music, and dancing, while Sunday culminates in the king's shooting and the proclamation of the new majesties. The festival follows the tradition of North German shooting associations and combines sporting competition with village conviviality, in which young and old alike participate.

Tradition on the Edge of the Bourtanger Moor

Rütenbrock is a district of the municipality of Twist in the southwestern Emsland, located directly on the Dutch border. The history of the place is closely linked to the reclamation of the moor and the resulting civic self-awareness. The Bürgerschützenverein, which still significantly shapes the social life of the village today, also developed from this tradition. The annual Schützenfest is much more than a club event: it is the identity-forming summer event where the village community reaffirms its roots and togetherness.

Structure of the Festival Weekend

The Schützenfest 2026 will take place on Saturday, July 11th, and Sunday, July 12th, at the Schützenplatz Rütenbrock. The event begins on Saturday afternoon with the assembly of the marksmen, a festive march through the village, and the entry into the festival tent. A dance band will play there until the early hours for the Schützenball (marksmen's ball), which unites club members, guests, and the youth of the village. On Sunday, the king's shooting will be the focus — the sporting competition to determine the new majesty of the club. This is followed by the proclamation of the king, the king's dinner, and a festive conclusion in the tent.

King's Shooting and Customs

The king's shooting is the heart of every Emsland Schützenfest. In the shooting competition for the wooden bird, candidates vie for the dignity of Schützenkönig (shooting king), who represents the club for one year. Whoever shoots down the last splinter of the bird is proclaimed king and chooses his queen. The dignity of king means both honor and obligation: the reigning king wears the king's chain, dedicated by his predecessors, and represents the club at the guest festivals of neighboring shooting clubs.

Connection to the Region

Rütenbrock is located in the heart of the Schützenfest landscape of the southern Emsland. Numerous clubs from the surrounding districts of Twist and Lathen maintain reciprocal visits and joint festival parades. With the Rütenbrock festival on the second weekend of July, the intensive high season of local traditional festivals begins for many shooting enthusiasts from Twist, Hebelermeer, Schöninghsdorf, and the surrounding villages.

Schützenfest Rütenbrock — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Rütenbrock Schützenfest will take place on the weekend of July 11th and 12th. The Bürgerschützenverein invites you to the traditional festival weekend with the Schützenball on Saturday and the king's shooting on Sunday. The tent will be set up on the Schützenplatz, the dance band will play, and the new majesty will be determined. The festival marks the start of the Rütenbrock event season and brings together the village community as well as guests from the surrounding districts of the municipality of Twist and neighboring shooting clubs from the southern Emsland.

Two Festival Days in Rütenbrock

The 2026 program follows the proven schedule of previous years and is divided into two festival days. Saturday is dedicated to the grand Schützenball, while Sunday is reserved for the sporting highlight — the king's shooting — and the proclamation of the new majesty. The club will publish more precise times and detailed information in advance on its website and through the local press.
