Kreismuseum Zons — a historical gem on the Rhine

Zons is now a district of Dormagen in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss (North Rhine-Westphalia) — historically one of the most important electoral Cologne customs stations on the Rhine. The Kreismuseum Zons is housed in the historic Friedestrom Castle, the former customs fortress — a medieval castle complex from the 14th century, which today serves as a museum for regional history and folklore. This historical setting makes the Adventsmarkt unique: here, Advent is not celebrated on a modern town square, but in a medieval castle courtyard.

46th Edition — One of the Oldest Traditions

With its 46th edition, the Adventsmarkt Kreismuseum Zons is among the oldest Christmas market traditions on the Lower Rhine. Starting in the early 1980s as a modest museum market, it has developed over the decades into a firmly established event that attracts visitors from all over the Rhein-Kreis Neuss and beyond in December.

Over 100 Exhibitors — Handcrafted, Regional

The 100 exhibitors offer a selection that consciously distinguishes itself from commercial mass-produced goods:

• Nativity scenes and Christmas tree decorations, handcrafted
• Neusser Engel (a regionally typical nativity figure)
• Tin figures for collectors and model builders
• Handmade pralines and confectionery
• Marzipan, traditionally made
• Honey, jams, liqueurs — from regional beekeepers and manufacturers
• Candles, wax figures, Advent decorations

Culinary Delights Against a Medieval Backdrop

The culinary selection is regionally rooted: Reibekuchen (Rhenish specialty), Bratwurst, Schmalz-Brot, roasted apples with cinnamon-sugar and honey, mulled wine (red and white varieties), children's punch, cookies. Food and drinks are served in the museum's rooms and in the castle courtyard — Advent atmosphere in medieval architecture.

Hands-on Program for Children

A craft activity invites children to participate — typical for Christmas markets with an educational focus. In addition, there is a diverse supporting program with music (brass band, children's choirs, small concerts), readings, and themed tours of the museum exhibition during the festive season.

Admission Model — Lean, Fair

Admission is kept low: Adults €4, Children €1.50, Family Ticket €7. This distinguishes the Adventsmarkt from free Christmas markets — the admission fee contributes to financing the event and ensures its high quality without sponsorship pressure. Opening hours are 11 am to 6 pm on both market days.

Kreismuseum Zons is located at Schloßstraße 1, 41541 Dormagen-Zons — directly on the right bank of the Rhine (or more precisely: on the Erft river shortly before its mouth into the Rhine). By public transport: Bus line 891 from Dormagen Hbf or from Cologne-Worringen station to Zons. By car: A 57 exit Dormagen, then direction Zons. Parking is available on the outskirts of the historic town center. Cologne is 25 kilometers away — the Adventsmarkt is also a popular excursion destination for families from Cologne.
