77th Season of World-Class Classical Music in the Baroque Basilica of Ottobeuren
The Basilica of St. Alexander and St. Theodore at the Ottobeuren Benedictine Abbey is one of the most significant sacred buildings of German late Baroque. It is against this backdrop that the Ottobeuren Concerts have been held since 1949 – one of Southern Germany's most renowned classical festivals, organized by the Markt Ottobeuren in close cooperation with the Benedictine Abbey.
The 77th season opens on June 21, 2026, with an absolute highlight: Sir Simon Rattle will conduct the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir in Edward Elgar's oratorio 'The Dream of Gerontius'. On July 19, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Symphony in G minor and his Requiem in D minor will be performed by the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Choir Hamburg and the Orchestra of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz München under the baton of Hansjörg Albrecht. The season concludes on September 20 with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, performing Anton Bruckner's monumental Symphony No. 8.
After a five-year renovation, the chamber concerts will return to the magnificent Kaisersaal of the Abbey in 2026 – the festive reopening itself is a program highlight. Additionally, there will be eight other programs featuring young ensembles, an international opera gala, and a dedicated series of children's concerts at the Ottobeuren Museum of Contemporary Art.
Ottobeuren (population approx. 8,500, district of Unterallgäu) has been a monastery village for over 1,200 years. The current Basilica was built in the 18th century and is considered a masterpiece of German Baroque. The acoustics of the Basilica are exceptional – a reason why international orchestras and soloists regularly travel to Ottobeuren. With only 8,500 inhabitants, the town offers a density of concerts that rivals the major classical festivals in the country.
The organizer is the Markt Ottobeuren in close cooperation with the Benedictine Abbey. The venues are the Basilica of St. Alexander and St. Theodore, the newly renovated Kaisersaal of the Abbey, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
The three Basilica Concerts in 2026 will bring three of the most renowned European orchestras to Ottobeuren: the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz München, and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. With Sir Simon Rattle and Vladimir Jurowski, two of the most influential conductors of our time will be on the podium.
Ottobeuren is located about 10 km south of the A96 motorway (exit Bad Grönenbach / Memmingen-Süd) in the Unterallgäu region, approximately 90 minutes from Munich and 60 minutes from Friedrichshafen. By train to Memmingen, then by bus.
Basilica Concerts: €36–€98 (Rattle, Jurowski) or €33–€86 (Mozart/Albrecht). Kaisersaal and Chamber Concerts are less expensive. Tickets are available from the Ottobeuren Tourist Office (+49 8332 921950) and the municipality's online shop.
The Basilica has special acoustics – for those who want to experience the full sonic richness, choose seats in the central nave, rows 5–15.
