Traditional Easter Bonfire of the Volunteer Fire Brigade in the Municipality of Rügge
The Easter Bonfire is an ancient North German custom with roots in pre-Christian spring rites: the first large bonfire of the season symbolically drives away winter and celebrates the awakening of nature. Today, the Easter Bonfire is a fixed date on the Easter weekend in almost every village in Schleswig-Holstein — usually organized by the local Volunteer Fire Brigade, which simultaneously demonstrates its presence in the village community and promotes its work.
In Rügge — a small municipality in the north of the Schleswig-Flensburg district, near the town of Süderbrarup — the Easter Bonfire is one of the fixed spring dates. For years, the venue has been the Alte Schule in the village center: the former school building, now used as a village center, forms the natural meeting point for the event with its courtyard. The Rügge Volunteer Fire Brigade builds woodpiles, expertly manages the fire, and provides catering.
The program is deliberately simple and uncomplicated — a real village event without a stage, without admission, without complicated fuss:
Rügge is a very small municipality with around 300 inhabitants in the Amt Süderbrarup district of Schleswig-Flensburg, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The region between the Schlei and the Flensburg Fjord is characterized by agriculture, with small fields, farmsteads, and hedgerows shaping the landscape. The Volunteer Fire Brigade is one of the most important village institutions — fire protection and, at the same time, a meeting place for generations.
As every year, the fire brigade builds the woodpile at the Alte Schule in the days before Easter. Dry wood is collected beforehand and stacked so that the fire burns stably and controllably. On Holy Saturday afternoon, the area is equipped with bars, a grill, and seating, the first guests arrive in the early evening — and as soon as dusk sets in, the fire is lit.
