Summer festival at Rathaus- and Zehntscheuerplatz with mini-regatta on the Lein, laser show, and partner-city program
The MitSommer-Fest is the most important summer event in the municipality of Abtsgmünd in the Ostalb district. It traditionally takes place on the second weekend in July — from Friday, 11 to Sunday, 13 July in 2026 — and uses the area between Rathausplatz and Zehntscheuerplatz in the town center. The name “MitSommer” is a play on words: Mit-Sommer (celebrating summer together) and at the same time summer solstice (midsummer). Three days of program bring the entire community together — about 5,000–8,000 visitors per year.
Friday begins with a special attraction: the Mini-Regatta on the Lein stream, which flows right through the festival area. Hundreds of handmade boats — crafted by children and adults during the previous year — are launched simultaneously into the Lein and drift in a boisterous, unusual competition through the town. A humorous jury awards prizes for the fastest, most creative, and most sunken boats. This tradition is unique and makes the MitSommer-Fest known throughout the region.
Saturday, 12 July is the main festival day. At 5:30 PM, the barrel tapping takes place — the official opening of the festival by the mayor. Afterwards, the festival band plays, followed by various bands from the region. The partner-city band from Castel Bolognese (Abtsgmünd's Italian partner city in Emilia-Romagna) gives a guest performance. The highlight of the evening is the gigantic laser show at 11 PM at Zehntscheuerplatz — a sophisticated pyro and laser spectacle that is expanded annually and is considered one of the best laser shows in the Ostalb region.
Sunday, 13 July starts with an ecumenical festival service. The afternoon features various sports and music clubs, children's programs (book-themed activities, a Minecraft tournament for young people), and the international component — the performance by the Castel Bolognese band is a central program item here. The festival ends late Sunday evening.
Abtsgmünd (around 6,700 inhabitants, Ostalb district, AGS 08136) is located in the western Kocher valley at the confluence of the Kocher and Lein rivers. The municipality is named after the former Comburg Monastery (Abts-Gmünd = the mouth of the Kocher into the Lein, near the monastery). Today, it is a small, very active municipality in the Ostalb district with a vibrant club culture. The partnership with Castel Bolognese in Emilia-Romagna has existed since the 1980s and is an important element of its cultural profile.
This year's edition upholds the established program highlights: the unique Mini-Regatta on the Lein, the traditional Saturday evening barrel tapping, the spectacular laser show as a visual highlight, and the Sunday service with an international component provided by the Italian partner-city band from Castel Bolognese.
The municipality of Abtsgmünd and its cultural department (Gisela Bauer, Tel. +49 7366 82-24) coordinate the program; local clubs — sports club, music club, fire department, marksmen, youth red cross — are responsible for catering and program contributions.
