Three-day district festival along Breite Straße with artist market, flea market, and Sunday shopping
Gonsenheim, with over 25,000 inhabitants, is one of the largest and liveliest districts of Mainz, located in the northwest of the city between Mombach, Finthen, and the city center. Breite Straße forms the vibrant commercial heart with a dense mix of owner-managed shops, cafés, restaurants, bakeries, and social meeting points. The Strawberry Festival has been the district festival for years that brings this urban vibrancy to the streets for a weekend.
The organizers are the Gonsenheim Business Association and the Traditional Customs Association, supported by numerous other clubs and initiatives in the district. The program design combines economic and cultural concerns: on the one hand, a showcase for Gonsenheim's business world, and on the other, a meeting place for residents and their guests from neighboring districts and the Mainz region.
The program is traditionally divided into three main focuses. The Artist Market, featuring arts and crafts, jewelry, ceramics, textile design, and small design products, spans the entire length of Breite Straße – many exhibitors come from Rheinhessen and the Rhine-Main region. The Flea Market, organized by TGM (Turngesellschaft Mainz), enlivens a side section and is a regular fixture for bargain hunters. The Sunday Shopping event opens Gonsenheim's shops from 1 PM to 6 PM, making the festival an economic highlight of the district year.
Live music on two stages along Breite Straße accompanies the program: regional bands from the rock, pop, folk, and singer-songwriter spectrum, as well as school and club ensembles. Bouncy castles, craft activities, and small competitions are organized for children. Mainz and Gonsenheim's gastronomy provides the culinary offerings – from classic bratwurst to strawberry cake, strawberry punch, and strawberry prosecco.
The 2026 program will be published by the organizers in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: Friday evening opening with initial stage music and open food stalls, Saturday daytime artist market along the entire Breite Straße and TGM flea market in a side section with live music on two stages, Sunday extended family program with bouncy castles, craft activities, and face painting, as well as the Sunday shopping event for Gonsenheim's shops between 1 PM and 6 PM.
