Tip
Visitors to the Bürgerfest should combine their day with a trip to the nearby Altmühlsee – swimming, pedal boating, visiting the bird island with its observation hut, or taking a circular hike around the lake. The Franconian Lake District offers ideal conditions for active family holidays. Book accommodation in advance, as the first weekend in July is peak season in the Lake District.
Over 40 Years of Civic Tradition
The Gunzenhäuser Bürgerfest has been held for over 40 years on the historic market square of the town of Gunzenhausen – a small Middle Franconian town in the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, Bavaria. The town is located on the Altmühlsee, the oldest of the three large reservoirs in the Franconian Lake District, and is one of the tourist hubs of this Bavarian lake region. The Bürgerfest originated as an initiative by local associations and the town administration to bring the community together on a central weekend.
On Gunzenhausen Market Square
The venue is the Market Square with its historic burgher houses, the Schmusebrunnen fountain, and the nearby town hall. For three days, it becomes a stage for concerts, a festival mile for community stalls, and an open-air dining area with tables and benches. The historic setting, the Franconian cobblestones, and the local architecture shape the unmistakable character of the festival.
Citizens for Citizens
The festival's ethos is embedded in its name: 'Bürgerfest' – a festival by citizens for citizens. Stalls are run by local associations, initiatives, churches, sports clubs, and music clubs. The proceeds usually go towards the associations' activities or social projects. This concept clearly distinguishes the Bürgerfest from commercial city festivals and is an important source of identity for the community.
Live Music and Program
On the stage at the Market Square, the following perform:
- Brass bands and traditional costume groups from the region
- Local mood and party bands
- Cover bands playing hits from recent decades
- Choirs and singing groups
- Dance groups from Gunzenhausen and the Lake District
In the afternoons, there are special programs for children with games, face painting, and hands-on activities. The program is explicitly designed to be family-friendly.
Culinary Offerings
Franconian specialties are offered at social prices at the community stalls: Bratwurst (grilled sausages), Schweinshaxn (pork knuckle), Schäuferla (pork shoulder), potato pancakes, Franconian snack platters, wine spritzers, Franconian beer, and at the sweet stalls, cakes and candied almonds. The culinary diversity – a combination of traditional Franconian cuisine and modern street food offerings – is one of the hallmarks of the Bürgerfest.
