Midsummer at Strunwai Beach — Traditional Costumes, Brass Music, Shanty Choir, and Beach Bonfire
The Midsummer Celebration on Amrum is one of the most beautiful and best-attended events of the North Frisian summer season. It combines two traditions: on one hand, the Northern European Midsummer customs, celebrating the bright June nights (known as Midsommar in Scandinavia), and on the other hand, the North Frisian island culture with its traditional costume groups, brass bands, and shanty choirs. The result is an evening that blends a folk festival with a serene natural spectacle — the midsummer sunset over the North Sea, the crackling of a large beach bonfire, and the sound of traditional sea shanties.
The event takes place on Strunwai Beach — the beach access between the Amrum villages of Nebel and Wittdün. The white sandy beach slopes gently, the Wadden Sea lies in the distance, and the view extends to the neighboring island of Föhr and, on clear days, to the Danish coast. In this geographically exposed location, the interplay of light, wind, and sunset is particularly intense.
The schedule follows a set choreography:
Three associations that shape Amrum's musical and folkloric life are the custodians of the celebration:
Amrum belongs to the North Frisia district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and is one of the largest North Frisian Islands. The three main villages Wittdün (ferry terminal), Nebel, and Norddorf, along with the Amrum Dune, form the island's community. The Midsummer Celebration is a joint festival of all three villages — and one of the few moments when the entire island population gathers in one place.
The Midsummer Celebration is free of charge. This decision is part of Amrum's festival tradition — the celebration is intended to be open to everyone, islanders and summer guests alike.
The Amrum Midsummer Celebration 2026 will be held on the longest day of the year — Sunday, June 21, 2026 — on the traditional Strunwai Beach between Nebel and Wittdün. As in previous years, the three Amrum associations — the traditional costume group, the brass band, and the Küstenmatrosenchor — will be responsible for the musical and folkloric program.
The highlight at 8:15 PM will be the solemn lighting of the large woodpile on the beach — followed by the open shanty concert, which invites all visitors to sing along.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the volunteer fire department stands for a fee.
From the mainland, take the WDR ferry from Dagebüll to Wittdün-Amrum (approx. 90 min. journey). From Wittdün ferry terminal to Strunwai Beach is about 1.5 km — on foot, by bike, or by the island bus line.
The Strunwai beach access road is closed to car traffic in the evening (exception: severely disabled persons and event participants). Therefore, arrival at the Midsummer Celebration is recommended on foot, by bike, or by island bus.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the volunteer fire department stands — for a fee.
Weather permitting: In case of strong winds or storms, the beach bonfire may be canceled for safety reasons — the traditional costume and shanty choir performances will take place in any weather.
