Amrum's southern Biike fire — traditional winter farewell on February 21, 2026
The Biikebrennen is one of the oldest and most identity-defining traditions of the North Frisian Islands and the mainland geest. On the evening of February 21 — the eve of St. Peter's Chair Day — large bonfires are lit throughout North Frisia to symbolically drive away winter and usher in spring. Since 2014, the Biike has been listed on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in Germany.
There are three traditional Biike bonfires on the island of Amrum — in Nebel, Norddorf, and Wittdün. The Wittdün Biike bonfire marks the southern end of the Amrum Biike series and has its firm place in the island's event calendar. While the northern island communities have their own focal points of tradition (Nebel with its historic thatched-roof houses, Norddorf with its nature center), Wittdün is characterized by harbor life and a pragmatic, maritime atmosphere.
The festival grounds are located behind the Wittdün Municipal Depot at Inselstraße 14. From 6 p.m., families, regular guests, and day-trippers gather around the prepared woodpile. As soon as the fire department lights the Biike, flames leap meters high into the February sky — with clear visibility, the view extends far across the Wadden Sea to the Halligen islands. The Wittdün Volunteer Fire Department operates a small stand on-site selling hot drinks (mulled wine, punch, tea) and snacks (sausages, pretzels).
Unlike festivals with stage programs, the Biikebrennen focuses on the atmosphere: the crackling of the fire, the warming flames in the cold February night, communal singing of Frisian songs, short speeches in the Frisian language, chatting with neighbors. The Biike is more about pausing than spectacle — and therein lies its special charm.
Amrum belongs to the district of North Frisia in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. With around 2,300 inhabitants on 20 square kilometers, it is smaller than the neighboring islands of Sylt and Föhr, but particularly culturally independent: Frisian language, thatched-roof architecture, an intact tradition scene, and a Wadden Sea National Park right on its doorstep. The Biikebrennen is one of the main symbols of this identity.
The date of the Biike is traditionally fixed: the evening of February 21. For 2026, the event in Wittdün is confirmed on the official Amrum tourism and tradition portals (nordischlifestyle.de, friesennetz.de).
As every year, the Wittdün fire is one of three Biike fires on Amrum (along with Nebel and Norddorf), which are lit one after another during the evening. From the Wittdün location, there is a unique view across the Wadden Sea in good weather.
Updates at short notice on amrum.de (especially in case of weather-related postponements due to storms).
Amrum can be reached by ferry from Dagebüll (mainland) or Wyk on Föhr — check the last connections on the evening of the festival, as February days are short. From Wittdün harbor, it's a 10-minute walk to the municipal depot.
Free admission. Hot drinks and snacks available from the fire department for a small fee.
Dress warmly! February evening winds on the Wadden Sea are sharp — a hat, scarf, and sturdy footwear are essential.
