17th edition of the island festival around the tallest lighthouse on the North Sea coast
The Amrumer Leuchtturm in Wittdün is one of Germany's most famous lighthouses: commissioned in 1875, 41.8 meters high, it is the tallest accessible tower on the German North Sea coast. Those who climb the 297 steps are rewarded with a unique view over the entire island of Amrum, the neighboring islands of Föhr, Sylt, and the Halligen islands of Hooge and Langeneß. On clear days, the view extends to the Danish coast.
The Leuchtturm-Tage have been celebrated annually for over 17 years. 2026 marks the 17th edition — and thus an established tradition linked to the lighthouse's 150th anniversary (2025). The event aims to make Wittdün's landmark more visible and offer a summer highlight for island vacationers.
Over the three days, several activities will take place simultaneously:
A drawing competition with attractive prizes is organized especially for children aged 4 and up:
Participation: Drawing and craft sheets are available at the festival area. Drawings are accepted daily until 12:00 PM, with the award ceremony taking place on the last day of the festival at 2:00 PM.
Wittdün is the southernmost of Amrum's three municipalities (along with Nebel and Norddorf) and also the main center for island tourism. It's home to the ferry port, the island's tourist information center, and the lighthouse. With around 700 inhabitants, Wittdün is small — but during the summer months, the population triples due to holiday guests. Amrum belongs to the district of Nordfriesland and is part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park (UNESCO World Heritage).
As in previous years, the Amrum Lighthouse will open its doors for longer daily hours during the Leuchtturm-Tage — climbing the tallest accessible tower on the German North Sea coast will be possible throughout the three days. The program at the festival area around the tower will be varied daily, with the highlight being the award ceremony for the children's drawing competition on the final day.
Detailed program available at amrum.de and nordseetourismus.de.
