Frisian Island Tradition Under the Open Sky

Amrum is one of the North Frisian Islands in the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein — located between Föhr and Sylt. Wittdün is the southernmost island municipality and the ferry landing point. On the meadow at the ferry terminal, directly at the island harbor, a special event takes place in the summer: the Entertainment Evening Open Air with the Amrumer Blaskapelle and the Amrumer Trachtengruppe.

What to Expect

The evening combines island customs with North German brass music:

• Amrumer Blaskapelle — the island band plays classic brass pieces, popular hits, and folk tunes
• Amrumer Trachtengruppe — dances in Frisian island costumes
• Frisian folk dances with centuries-old choreographies
• Open-air setting directly at the Wittdün ferry terminal with a view of the harbor and the Wadden Sea
• Standing room and meadow area — blankets and folding chairs welcome

Island Costume and Identity

The Amrum costume — similar to the Föhr costume yet distinct — is an expression of the island Frisian identity. Embroidered bodices, caps, black skirts, and white aprons differentiate festive wear from everyday wear. The dances also stem from this tradition — they were preserved from being forgotten in the 20th century and are still performed today.

Whitsun on Amrum is traditionally a peak season — tourism, island events, and concerts increase. The Entertainment Evening is a format that appeals equally to island residents and guests: free admission, a cozy meadow atmosphere, guaranteed authentic island tradition.
