Bavaria on the Dutch Border
What a Bavarian innkeeper conceived in 1964 is now one of the largest Oktoberfests in North Rhine-Westphalia: the Haaren Oktoberfest in Waldfeucht-Haaren, in the far west of the Heinsberg district, on the Dutch border. With over six decades of tradition, the festival has long been a fixture on the regional event calendar. The 62nd edition in 2026 continues this tradition.
Festival Tent Atmosphere and Bavarian Program
On the festival grounds at the windmill (Elsweg), a classic beer tent with a stage, long beer benches, and Bavarian decorations is set up. Live bands perform for three evenings — from typical Oktoberfest cover bands to regional rock 'n' roll acts. Stein holding, arm wrestling, swaying, and Bavarian folklore characterize the evenings. Pork knuckles, pretzels, dumplings, and the obligatory Wiesn beer complete the experience.
Selfkant Region — Germany's Westernmost Tip
Waldfeucht and the adjacent Selfkant form Germany's westernmost tip. Here, you'll hear Dutch just as often as German in everyday life; the border feels invisible — many Dutch people cross over, and the people of Haaren celebrate the mix of both cultures. The Oktoberfest benefits from this: about half of the visitors come from the Netherlands (Sittard, Roermond, Maastricht).
More Than Bavarian Folklore
The Haaren Oktoberfest is not the one Munich original — it's a Lower Rhine-Westphalian adaptation that has its own tradition. Local clubs (Haaren Carnival Club, Rifle Association) are involved in the organization, and the entire village community helps. This is what makes its special character: here, people don't just consume; they organize and celebrate together.
Heinsberg District
The Heinsberg district is part of the westernmost area of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the Dutch border between Roermond and Aachen. With around 256,000 inhabitants and 10 municipalities, it is characterized by its rural and green landscape. Waldfeucht itself has about 9,000 inhabitants, and the district of Haaren about 2,500.
