Four Advent weekends on Mölln's historic market square under Northern Germany's most beautiful Christmas tree
Mölln is a small town of around 19,000 inhabitants in the Duchy of Lauenburg district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It lies between Lübeck and Lauenburg in the East Holstein lake district and is known as the Eulenspiegel Town: Till Eulenspiegel is said to have died here in the 14th century; his supposed gravestone stands at St. Nicolai Church. The historic old town with its town hall, church, and collegiate cloister is one of the most intact North German urban ensembles.
The Mölln Christmas Market stands out from the many small Advent markets in Northern Germany for two reasons: the historic setting — the market square in front of St. Nicolai Church, with the Gothic brick town hall next to it — and its well-thought-out concept. Unlike many markets, Mölln does not run continuously but focuses on the four Advent weekends:
For years, the highlight has been Northern Germany's most beautiful Christmas tree in the center of the market square — over 20 meters high, decorated with thousands of lights and exclusively red baubles. Against the backdrop of medieval brick architecture and St. Nicolai Church, an image emerges that has become the photographic calling card of Mölln's Advent season in recent years.
Unlike purely mulled wine markets, Mölln offers a curated gift world in the Historic Town Hall: North German handicrafts — ceramics, wood, textiles, jewelry —, Christmas decorations, books, and toys. One floor down, the gastronomy area awaits with mulled wine, grilled specialties, Mutzen, potato pancakes, and crêpes.
A Mölln specialty: On all Saturdays and Sundays during Advent, all local public transport in Mölln is free. This makes the market a convenient excursion destination even without a car — a concept that is rare in Schleswig-Holstein.
The Mölln Christmas Market 2026 will take place, as always, on all four Advent weekends: November 27–29, December 4–6, December 11–13, and December 18–20. One of the most beautiful North German Advent ensembles will be created on the historic market square in front of St. Nicolai Church and in the Historic Town Hall.
At the center: Northern Germany's most beautiful Christmas tree with thousands of lights and red baubles. In the town hall, the curated handicraft gift world — ceramics, wood, textiles, jewelry. Outside, mulled wine, grilled specialties, Mutzen, potato pancakes.
