A Market with Fire and Family

In Wallerfangen, a municipality of 9,000 inhabitants in the Saarlouis district, the Nikolausmarkt doesn't follow a standard script. Instead of interchangeable mulled wine stalls, the community focuses on atmosphere: open fires, breadsticks, a real fire show in the evening, and a lantern parade for the children. It is precisely these details that have made the market a hidden gem in western Saarland for years.

When Does the Market Take Place?

Traditionally on the first weekend of December. In 2025, the market ran on December 6th and 7th – Saturday from 3 PM to 11 PM, Sunday from 11 AM to 7 PM. For 2026, the weekend of December 5th/6th, 2026, is likely to be set as the date. The exact date will be announced shortly on wallerfangen.de.

What to Experience

Market Stalls

Decorated stalls around the Fabrikplatz in front of the town hall offer Christmas goods and culinary specialties. There is a competition for the most beautiful stall – the associations put in considerable effort.

Fire Show on Saturday Evening

The visual highlight: A group of fire artists provides a spectacle on Saturday evening with juggling, staffs, and pyrotechnics. Usually around 7 PM or 8 PM – find a good viewing spot early.

Children's Lantern Parade

On Sunday afternoon, children gather with their homemade lanterns, parade from the Fabrikplatz through Wallerfangen's town center, and return to the market. Accompanied by parents, sometimes also by the Bergkapelle (mining brass band).

Campfire Breadsticks and Open Fire

Children can roast their own breadsticks over a specially set-up fire – a classic that never gets old.

Raffle and Lottery

Raffle for children with small prizes, lottery for everyone.

Wallerfangen – Where Is It?

Wallerfangen is located in the Saartal valley, about 5 km west of Saarlouis, on the border with Lorraine. The municipality has a remarkable history: it was the seat of the Wallerfangen office in the Middle Ages and is now known for its churches, Bockenheim Castle, and the nearby Wallerfangen mining (copper mine). The Fabrikplatz is reminiscent of the former Villeroy & Boch glass factory, which operated one of its oldest plants here.

Atmosphere Instead of Mass Tourism

The Nikolausmarkt Wallerfangen is small, personal, and without large coach groups. Those looking for an authentic Saarland Advent market – not too touristy, not too commercial – will find it here. Families from the Saarlouis district and neighboring France make up the majority of the audience.
