Main Kirchweih of the municipality of Memmelsdorf in the Bamberg district — a four-day festival with SV Memmelsdorf, Music Association, and traditional sausage breakfast
The Memmelsdorf Main Kirchweih is the annual main Kirchweih of the town of Memmelsdorf in the Upper Franconian district of Bamberg. It takes place every year in August — in 2026 on the weekend of August 14 to 17. The festival is jointly organized by local clubs — primarily the Musikverein Memmelsdorf (Memmelsdorf Music Association) and the sports club SV Memmelsdorf — and the municipal administration.
A special feature of the municipality of Memmelsdorf: With its eight districts (Drosendorf, Kremmeldorf, Laubend, Lichteneiche, Meedensdorf, Merkendorf, Schmerldorf, Weichendorf), it is one of the municipalities with the most Kirchweihen in the Bamberg district. Spread throughout the summer months, the individual districts celebrate nine different Kirchweihen — from the athletes' Kirchweih and the Weichendorf Anna-Kerwa at the end of July to the Merkendorf Kirchweih at the end of August. The Main Kirchweih in Memmelsdorf itself, held in mid-August, is the largest and most central of this series.
The festival program follows a proven four-day structure: Friday evening marks the festival's start with a beer tapping and the first concert; Saturday features festival tent operations with live music from the Memmelsdorf Music Association and a DJ night (previously featuring local DJs Fusion Bros and DJ Hammer); Sunday includes a festival service in the parish church, a morning pint (Frühschoppen), sports performances by SV Memmelsdorf, a grand parade in the afternoon, and a festival evening; Monday offers a traditional white sausage breakfast (Weißwurstfrühschoppen) and the traditional Schlachtschüssel to conclude the festivities.
Memmelsdorf is known beyond the region for the princely-bishopric Schloss Seehof with its palace park — the former summer residence of the Bamberg Prince-Bishops. The palace is located in the Seehof district of Memmelsdorf, and the palace park hosts the Spring Serenades every May. With its numerous Kirchweihen and events around Schloss Seehof, Memmelsdorf is one of the most culturally active municipalities in the Bamberg district.
The SV Memmelsdorf and the Musikverein Memmelsdorf jointly support the festival with the parish and the municipality. Sporting events (demonstrations by sports departments, mini-football for children, football tournament on festival Sunday) alternate with musical program items (festival concert by the Music Association, festival evening with a dance band, DJ night).
A culinary specialty of the Memmelsdorf Kirchweih is the Schlachtschüssel on festival Monday — a traditional Franconian dish with boiled pork, blood sausage, liver sausage, sauerkraut, and fresh farmer's bread. This is accompanied by Bamberg beer ( Rauchbier, Weizen, Helles), regional sausage and snack specialties, grilled half-chickens, and roast pork on festival Sunday.
The Memmelsdorf Main Kirchweih 2026 will be celebrated from Friday, August 14, to Monday, August 17, 2026, at the Memmelsdorf festival grounds. The four-day Main Kirchweih is the largest club and community festival of the summer in the Bamberg district.
The program includes: Festival opening on Friday with beer tapping and the first concert; Saturday with live music from the Memmelsdorf Music Association and a DJ night; Sunday with a festival service, morning pint, sports demonstrations, and a parade; Monday with a white sausage breakfast and the traditional Schlachtschüssel to conclude the festival.
Key organizers include the Musikverein Memmelsdorf, the SV Memmelsdorf, the parish, and the municipal administration. The detailed daily program will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival by the municipality of Memmelsdorf and in the Kirchweih calendar for the City & District of Bamberg.
