Classical summer concerts in the baroque palace complex near Bamberg
Schloss Seehof is one of the most beautiful baroque palace complexes in Franconia — built between 1686–1696 by the Bamberg Prince-Bishop Marquard Sebastian Schenk von Stauffenberg as a summer residence, designed by court architect Antonio Petrini. Four towers frame the square palace courtyard, and a spacious baroque park with water features and sculptures surrounds the complex. Today, Schloss Seehof is managed by the Bavarian Palace Department and is open as a museum and for concerts and events.
The Musiksommer Schloss Seehof combines two concert formats. The Sommerserenaden at the end of July and beginning of August are a series of open-air concerts in the baroque palace courtyard — atmospherically dense summer evenings with music under the open sky. This is followed by the Schloss Festival season until mid-September, with concerts mainly in the baroque orangery. The repertoire ranges from classical string quartets and solo chamber music to guitar crossovers.
The Bamberger Symphoniker — Bavarian State Philharmonic is closely associated with the Musiksommer as its ensemble. The Bamberger String Quartet acts as the "Quartet in Residence" — it performs several concerts per season in the palace courtyard and the orangery. In addition, soloists from the orchestra, guests from the southern German classical scene, and selected crossover projects perform.
Memmelsdorf is located about 7 km north of Bamberg in the Bamberg district, on the edge of the Franconian hill country. Schloss Seehof is easily accessible by bus and car from Bamberg — ideal for a day trip from the UNESCO World Heritage city. Its location on the edge of the palace park, the view over the Franconian landscape, and the historical substance of the complex give the concerts an aura that cannot be achieved in modern concert halls.
The 2026 season kicks off with the Sommerserenaden at the end of July/beginning of August — four concerts between July 30 and August 2 in the restored palace courtyard. In case of bad weather, the concerts will move to the Baroque Orangery. Highlight: the Crossing Strings concert on August 2 with a double performance (11:00 AM and 7:30 PM).
In August and September, further concerts will feature the Bamberger String Quartet as "Quartet in Residence", soloists from the Bamberger Symphoniker, and guests from the southern German region. The season concludes on September 13. Detailed program available at festival-schloss-seehof.de.
