Central commemoration ceremony on the anniversary of the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp
The Liberation Ceremony at the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site is one of Germany's most significant commemorative events. It commemorates the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp by US troops at the end of April 1945. The Dachau concentration camp was the first permanent concentration camp of the National Socialist regime and served as a model for the entire camp system. In 2026, the liberation will be commemorated for the 81st time.
The ceremony is characterized by a sequence of interreligious and state memorial moments:
The Liberation Ceremony is supported by the Comité International de Dachau (CID), the international association of survivors and their relatives, together with the Bavarian Memorials Foundation and the management of the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. The participation of survivors, their families, and international delegations lends the ceremony a special, cautionary dignity.
The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site is located in the town of Dachau, in the district of the same name in the state of Bavaria, about 20 kilometers northwest of Munich. It is a central place of remembrance culture and historical-political education. The annual Liberation Ceremony keeps the warning "Never again" alive.
