50 sports to try for free in the Olympic Park
The Munich Outdoor Sports Festival is one of the largest freely accessible participatory sports festivals in Germany. The venue is the world-famous Olympiapark Munich — host of the 1972 Olympic Games and for decades a symbol of free, urban sports experience in the heart of a major city. The festival utilizes the entire park area: the Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz, the shores and waters of the Olympiasee, the peninsula with the Theatron, and the roof of the Kleine Olympiahalle.
The program focuses on maximum breadth: over 50 classic and modern sports can be tested in one day. In the classic category: Tennis, Hockey, Football, Volleyball, Athletics, Climbing, Swimming. In the modern trend category: Breaking (Olympic discipline since 2024), Pumptrack, Snakeboarding, Slacklining, Bouldering, SUP. Water sports: Dragon boat racing on the Olympiasee, Canoe, Kayak, Stand-up paddling. In the winter sports category: Summer Biathlon with laser rifles. Frisbee, Archery, Boxing, Trampoline. All stations are supervised by experienced trainers from the respective sports clubs and associations.
A central aspect is inclusion: sports such as wheelchair basketball, goalball (team sport for visually impaired athletes), sitting volleyball, and para-climbing are part of the festival program. Families will find dedicated children's stations, seniors special offers — the concept aims to make sports accessible to everyone.
The organizers are the Department for Education and Sport of the State Capital Munich and Olympiapark München GmbH. The individual sports stations are independently supervised and financed by sports partners — clubs, associations, schools, and initiatives from the greater Munich area. Mayor Verena Dietl described the festival in 2025 with the words: Sport brings joy, is healthy, and creates community.
Munich has been internationally established as a sports city since the 1972 Olympic Games. With the Outdoor Sports Festival, the annual 'Sportstadt' event series, and the successful bid for the European Championships, the city underscores its claim to anchor movement in urban everyday life.
The tenth edition of the Outdoor Sports Festival takes place on Sunday, September 27, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM in Munich's Olympic Park. The anniversary edition builds on the great success of previous years — around 40,000 visitors were counted in 2025.
The sports stations are spread across four main areas of the park: the Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz as the central hub with registration and information booths, the area around the Olympiasee for water sports, the peninsula with action sports, and the Olympiaberg for running and outdoor disciplines.
Completely free. All sports stations, coaching, and equipment are freely accessible. Food stalls on the festival grounds at market prices.
Take the U-Bahn line U3 to Olympiazentrum or the tram lines 20/21 to Olympiapark West. By car: Parking at the Olympic Park is limited; arrival by public transport is recommended.
