Europe's largest queer street festival — two days on Nollendorfplatz / Motzstraße in Schöneberg
When mid-July sees Motzstraße, Eisenacher Straße, and the entire district around Nollendorfplatz closed to traffic, and stages, bars, stalls, and thousands of dancers gather across 20,000 m², then Europe's largest queer street festival is underway. The Lesbian-Gay City Festival Berlin, colloquially known as the Motzstraßenfest, has been the annual major event for Berlin's LSBTIQ* community since 1993 — and organizer Regenbogenfonds der Schwulen Wirte e.V. has developed it into one of Europe's most important queer manifestations.
The district around Nollendorfplatz in Berlin-Schöneberg has been the traditional heart of queer Berlin life since the 1920s — Christopher Isherwood lived here, the Eldorado was located here, Marlene Dietrich made the district world-famous. Today, Schöneberg-Nord is the Rainbow Quarter: dense with bars, clubs, saunas, bookstores, and queer infrastructure. The City Festival makes this character explosively tangible once a year — Schöneberg residents, Berliners, and international tourists celebrate together.
Programmatically, the City Festival is divided into six stages and six festival worlds:
The six festival worlds include the Film World, Politics World, Health and Wellness World, Sports World, FLINTA* Visibility, and the Fetish Community.
The City Festival explicitly sees itself as an anti-violence initiative and political demonstration. With the 2026 motto — "Equal Rights for Unequal People — worldwide!" — the event explicitly addresses multiple discrimination and queer rights worldwide. Safety and awareness concepts are fundamental.
The City Festival takes place one week before Christopher Street Day (CSD) Berlin — and is thus considered the unofficial start of the Berlin Pride season. Those who want to experience the full queer Berlin summer program can combine the City Festival, CSD, and the numerous accompanying Pride events.
For the 32nd time, the Rainbow Quarter around Nollendorfplatz in Berlin-Schöneberg transforms into Europe's largest queer street festival. Organizer Regenbogenfonds der Schwulen Wirte e.V. sends a political message for queer rights worldwide and against multiple discrimination with the motto “Equal Rights for Unequal People — worldwide!”. Six stages, six festival worlds, approx. 500,000 visitors expected.
