Four weeks of queer Christmas market at Nollendorfplatz
Since the 1920s, Nollendorfplatz has been the heart of gay Berlin. Christopher Isherwood's "Goodbye to Berlin" and the musical "Cabaret" were set here; to this day, Motzstraße and the surrounding streets with their bars, cafés, and bookstores are the center of Berlin's queer scene. With Christmas Avenue, the community is creating an Advent monument to its own neighborhood: a Christmas market explicitly designed for LGBTQIA* people — as a safe space, a meeting place, and a visible response to the heteronormative dominance of classic Christmas markets.
The venue is the area beneath the historic elevated U-Bahn railway at Nollendorfplatz, which opened in 1902 as Berlin's second subway line. The steel support structure and the distinctive greenish iron construction form an atmospheric and unusual backdrop — and the covered area protects the market and visitors from rain and snow.
The daily stage program significantly distinguishes Christmas Avenue from other Berlin Christmas markets. Drag Queens and Drag Kings — many of them prominent Berlin performers — take the microphone. Live music from pop, Schlager, and cabaret alternates with DJ sets. Special events like Drag Bingo and Drag Karaoke attract their own fan base, while "Winter Wonderdate" is designed as a queer matchmaking format.
The bar and food offerings focus on mulled wine, hot cocktails, and punch. Unlike many Berlin markets, payment is exclusively by card — cash is not accepted. Handmade products, queer manufacturers, and community-related stalls characterize the commercial offerings. Those planning a private party can book their own "Party Booth" starting at €355 — for everything from birthdays to company celebrations.
"A discrimination-free meeting point, a safe space for all" — this is how the organizer describes the market. Admission is for ages 16 and up, and the security concept is explicitly queer-sensitive. Christmas Avenue thus makes a statement: even during Advent, queer visibility has its place in Berlin. The market is part of a growing series of LGBTQIA* Advent events in major German cities — a pioneer because it takes place in the historic gay quarter directly at Nollendorfplatz.
The 2026 season is expected to start at the end of November and run until just before Christmas — based on the 2025 season (November 24 to December 23). The organizer traditionally confirms the exact dates a few weeks before the season begins on the official website.
The focus is on the daily stage program with drag shows, live music, and DJ sets, plus themed evenings and events like Drag Bingo, Drag Karaoke, and "Winter Wonderdate". Christmas Avenue sees itself as a safe space — the security concept and door policy are designed to be queer-sensitive.
