One of Europe's largest historical festivals in Landshut's Old Town
The Landshuter Hochzeit 1475 is one of the most significant historical festivals in Europe. It takes place only every four years and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Old Town of Landshut in the district of Landshut, Bavaria, each time. The festival commemorates the historical wedding of Duke's son Georg of Bavaria-Landshut with Polish King's daughter Hedwig in November 1475 – one of the most splendid princely weddings of the German late Middle Ages.
The festival was first held in 1903 to commemorate the historical event. The Landshuter Hochzeit is supported by the non-profit association Die Förderer e.V. Over the decades, the festival has developed into one of Europe's largest costume festivals; it is recognized as intangible cultural heritage, and the association is seeking UNESCO recognition.
During the multi-week festival period, visitors can expect a packed program:
The special feature of the Landshuter Hochzeit is its historical accuracy: costumes, music, weapons, and customs are reconstructed with great care. All participants come from Landshut and the surrounding area, bringing the late Middle Ages to life throughout the city. For many families, participating across generations is a tradition.
As the festival only takes place every four years, there is no event in 2026. The next Landshuter Hochzeit is scheduled for the period from June 25 to July 18, 2027. Program details and ticket sales will be announced from summer 2026 on the official festival website.
The 2027 edition of the Landshuter Hochzeit 1475 spans several weeks from June 25 to July 18, 2027. The highlight is the festive reenactment of the historical wedding procession through Landshut's Old Town with over 2,000 participants in detailed costumes. The festival is accompanied by jousting tournaments, equestrian games, medieval camp life, as well as music and dance performances. As the festival only takes place every four years, the 2027 edition is a special event. The exact program schedule and advance ticket sales will be announced from summer 2026 via the official website.
Access to the Old Town and many program points is free. Tickets are sold for the festive reenactment and selected events; prices and advance sales from summer 2026 via the official website.
