International Festival for Early Music in the historic Old Town of Landshut
The Landshuter Hofmusiktage were founded in 1982, making them the oldest Early Music festival in Bavaria. The special feature: Music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque is performed in rooms that date back to their respective eras. The magnificent town hall hall, the Jesuit church, the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche, the church of St. Margaret, the Salzstadel, and Trausnitz Castle provide a backdrop that makes the historical repertoire immediately tangible.
For almost three decades, the festival has delighted its audience with new discoveries and presents fascinating soloists and ensembles from all over Europe. Each edition is dedicated to a thematic motto that runs through the concert programme. In addition to classical concerts, the festival increasingly focuses on innovative formats – such as the encounter between hip-hop and Early Music or poetry slams – and involves amateur musicians from the city in large participation projects.
The medieval Old Town of Landshut, with its famous street architecture and Trausnitz Castle, is itself part of the festival experience. The festival builds on the city's musical tradition, which is known, among other things, for the historical Landshut Wedding. It is supported by the association Landshuter Hofmusiktage e.V.
Under the motto "Death & Life", the 2026 edition explores the dark and joyful sides of life. The official opening takes place on Saturday, June 13th, 2026, at 11 am in the historic town hall hall. The festival runs until July 19th and uses numerous historic venues in Landshut's Old Town.
A special community project under the guiding principle "From Landshuters for Landshuters" brings Handel's "Messiah" in a large ensemble and in its original English language as a participation project with amateurs and professional musicians to the stage.
Further participants include: the ensemble Los Temperamentos, the commedia dell'arte formation I Buffoni dispettosi, and the Landshuter Hofkapelle with music from the time of the Landshut Wedding. The complete programme is available on the official website.
Landshut is easily accessible by train (regional services and ICE connections via Munich/Regensburg). The venues are mostly located within the walkable Old Town. Travel by car via the A92 motorway.
Tickets for each event are available via the official website and local advance booking (okticket.de). The opening in 2026 will take place on June 13th at 11 am in the town hall hall.
